The objective of this study was to formulate a model of elementary Korean language textbook for Spanish speakers by effectively reflecting differences between Korean and Spanish, the characteristics of the languages, and variables related to learners and learning environment and, by doing so, to contribute the efficient and effective achievement of the ultimate goal of Korean language education, which is developing communication skills in Spanish?]speaking learners.
The results of this study are as follows.
Chapter I presented the necessities and objectives of the development of Korean language textbooks for Spanish learners, and reviewed theories of comparative linguistics to discuss textbook development.
Chapter II analyzed Korean and Spanish comparatively in four areas, which were phoneme, form, syntax and culture, and examined differences and similarities between the two languages. Furthermore, we surveyed the current state of Korean language education in Spanish?]speaking regions, and selected and analyzed four kinds of existing textbooks for Spanish speakers. According to the results, although they were for Spanish speakers, the textbooks did not give sufficient consideration to the cultural characteristics of Spanish and Spanish?]speaking regions and to their differences from Korean language and culture. Furthermore, they lacked in consideration of variables related to learning environment and learners in Spanish?]speaking regions. In addition, criteria for level were ambiguous as evidenced by the large variation in the volume and difficulty of grammar and vocabulary.
Chapter III defined the goals, targets, level, scope and character of the new Korean language textbook for Spanish learners as well as five construction principles.
The new Korean language textbook for Spanish speakers is an elementary material targeting adult learners who live in Spanish?]speaking regions and speak Spanish as their mother tongue. In addition, it adopts a mixed syllabus and integrates speaking, listening, writing and reading. The textbook is constructed based on comparative linguistic knowledge of the two languages, utilizes assignments, presents grammar as explicitly and precisely as possible, includes the role of a workbook, and takes a learner?]friendly external form. Based on these discussions, we suggested specific methods of textbook construction, and presented the contents of the textbook, a unit construction model, and an example of teaching plans.
Chapter IV summarized the discussions above and drew conclusions.
This study has a limitation in that it did not survey users?f requirements. Nevertheless, this study is meaningful in that it initiated discussion on Korean language education in Spanish?]speaking regions, which have been so far isolated from Korean language education.
