The purpose of the study is to see how the difficulty level of vocabularies is decided in the word formation process. For the study, I use the complex nouns from the list of basic vocabulary for teaching Korean of Cho Namho(2003) and the vocabularies classified by difficulty level of Kim Kwanghae(2003). I limited the vocabularies used for the study only to nouns, because it accounts for the largest part of all. Thus, I examined the difficulty levels of all the morphemes that compose each complex noun, and then that of the complex noun.
This study pioneered a new area called "the principles on the difficulty level of vocabularies in the word formation process", which is very different from the other studies focusing on simple words. Also, this study can provide basic data for the study on strategies for effective learning vocabularies based on the word formation and structure.
It is obvious that vocabularies should be presented in order of difficulty level, from the easiest one to the most difficult. But, for the more systematic approach in teaching vocabulary, it is necessary to check how the difficulty level of vocabularies is formed.
This study is organized as below:
In chapter 1, I reviewed the previous studies based on Cho Namho(2003) and Kim Kwanghae(2003), mentioning that lots of the studies just invoked Cho Namho(2003) and Kim Kwanghae(2003), but didn't discuss the characteristics of them carefully and thoroughly.
In chapter 2, I reviewed the various previous studies on making the list of basic vocabulary for teaching Korean. Among those, I examined the process of selecting the basic vocabulary and grading the difficulty level of them in Cho Namho(2003) and Kim Kwanghae(2003). Finally, I presented the methods for analysis of word structure that is used in this study.
In chapter 3, I examined the word formation of complex nouns and the distribution of the difficulty level of vocabularies in Cho Namho(2003) in various ways: in 3.1, the matching tendency between level A, level B, and level C morphemes; in 3.2, word formation within the same level morphemes; in 3.3, word formation within the different level morphemes; in 3.4, the comparative proportion of A, B, and C found in various dimension; in 3.5, the ranking order of word formation including A, B, and C respectively; in 3.6, the location of A, B, and C in word formation and its frequency
In chapter 4, in the same way used in chapter 3, I examined the word formation of complex nouns and the distribution of the difficulty level of vocabularies in Kim Kwanghae(2003) in various ways: in 4.1, the matching tendency between level A, level B, level C, and level D morphemes; in 4.2, word formation within the same level morphemes; in 4.3, word formation within the different level morphemes; in 4.4, the comparative proportion of A, B, C, and D found in various dimension; in 4.5, the ranking order of word formation including A, B, C, and D respectively; in 4.6, the location of A, B, C, and D in word formation and its frequency
In chapter 5, I summarized the key points of the study and mentioned the issues left to be studied in the future.
