This study targets for how to educate native English speaking assistant teachers in Korean language and culture who are working in Korean schools.
In the first chapter, I unveiled that native English speaking assistant teachers have a lot of difficulties in adapting themselves to school and society, which are caused by cultural differences as well as linguistic barriers, and suggested that the systematic cultural education for them can be achieved by the education of Korean language itself. In addition, through the preliminary research, I had examined the main ideas and characteristics of discussions on native English speaking assistant teachers and looked over the streams of inter-cultural communication study in the recent cultural approach.
In the next chapter, the general features of Native English speaking assistant teachers are indicated who are growing remarkably in numbers today. To do so, I checked the present state published by the national department of Education and Science and figured out the traits that they have as Korean language learners to show the direction for Korean language and culture education. And the present state of cultural education as a part of Korean language education for native English speaking assistant teachers is presented. By defining the quality of cultural education and clarifying problems, I emphasized the necessity of the Korean language and culture education for them and explored the realistic ways. I also grasped what it has now by analyzing the language and culture education included in the various native teachers' training programs and proposed how to implement and improve the program. Furthermore, I used the language and culture items in『Dr. GEPIK』, a guide book for native English speaking assistant teachers published by Gyeonggi Board of Education, as a basis of systematic learning contents of culture and my own questionnaire research.
In the third chapter, I catched their cultural understandings and needs as Korean language learners and utilized them to make suggestions. After setting up the elements of their Korean language and culture, to understand the learner needs in Korean langue learning and reflect them in an appropriate way, I practiced a survey to the native English speaking assistant teachers working in Gyeonggi public middle and high schools and applied the results to this study.
In the forth chapter, I offered the effective ways to educate native English speaking assistant teachers in Korean language and culture. Then I extracted the key cultural elements and contents to teach them. Specifically, I established the criteria to elect Korean cultural items based on learner questionnaire analysis and existing preliminary research. Following the criteria, I listed Korean cultural factors that they should learn in advance.
In the last the fifth chapter, I summarized the previous details and supplied the logical weak points and the future tasks in this subject matter.
