The Production and Perception of English Front Vowels : A Phonetic and Phonological Study of L1 Transfer Errors
Lee, Shin Young
The purpose of this thesis is to compare the pronunciation of Korean speakers and English speakers' English front vowel - /i/ /ɪ/ /ɛ/ /?/. This thesis also deals with Korean speakers' production and perception of English front vowels. This thesis focuses on first language transfer errors.
The first experiment is to measure and analyze the formant of frequencies of English front vowels pronounced by Korean speakers, and compare them with English native speakers and Korean native speakers.
The second experiment is to find the relation between Korean non-native English speakers' English vowel production and perception through a sentence listening and recording experiment using Praat.
Three Americans adults and three Korean adult students participated in the first experiment to measure formant frequencies and durations of English front vowels.
The result shows that American native English speakers' formant frequencies are generally higher than those of Korean speakers. However, Koreans' durations are longer than Americans' durations. This may have been caused by the language transfer from their own Korean language habit because Korean speakers distinguish words from length.
In the sentence test, ten Korean adult students participated in a listening and recording experiment to discover the relation of production and perception. The result indicates that production and perception do not have any relation.
The study indicates that English teachers should give emphasis to teaching the distinctness of front vowels. The teachers can use programs like Praat to help the student practice their pronunciation.
In conclusion, English teachers should put an effort to teach their students English vowels more articulately and correctly.
