The PESQ measure is an objective speech quality evaluation measure that is known to show high correlation with subjective speech quality measure such as MOS. The purpose of this study is to investigate the validity of PESQ measure for objective quality evaluation of synthetic speech. For this, we carried out both subjective evaluation test with MOS, DMOS and objective evaluation test with PESQ for the HTS-based Korean speech signals. Then we analyzed the correlation between subjective test result and objective test, such as MOS vs PESQ and DMOS vs PESQ.
We made 15 Korean synthetic speech signals by selecting 15 sentences from HTS training database. Then we performed the subjective speech quality evaluation. Experimental has shown that the PESQ has the correlation of 0.87 with MOS, and correlation of 0.92 with DMOS. That means the PESQ is very promising for the evaluation of synthetic speech quality when we can have both synthetic speech signal and original reference speech signal.
