The purpose of the present research is placed on precisely describing and illustrating the syntactic and semantic characteristics of speed adjectives in Korean.
In the preexisting researches, the speed adjectives were grasped as a single category for its syntactic and semantic characteristics to not be discussed. Moreover, the distinct agreements could not be found within the contents and categories as well as concept provisions and characteristics of time or speed. Therefore, the researches for the syntactic and semantic charactehstics as well as the character and position of speed adjectives are in demand.
In chapter 2, the syntactic and semantic characteristics of general adjectives were examined. Moreover, the subjects that were categorized as time(speed) adjectives within the preexisting researches were examined. To conclude the contents of speed adjectives, the definition and class of speed adjectives were concluded.
In chapter 3, the speed adjectives were examined from the syntactic perspective. The case-frame and the semantic translation of speed adjective were closely observed.
In chapter 4, the speed adjectives were examined from the semantic perspective. With subjects of examples derived from corpus, the semantic charactehstics possessed by each individual speed adjectives were grasped and the seme of the individual speed adjectives were broken down. The vocabulary that combined with the speed adjectives were divided by the characteristics of their definitions. Based on the results of the research stated above, the semantics systems of speed adjectives was established and with this in the background, it systematically described the synonymic relations and the antonimous relationship amongst the speed adjectives.
