Given the increasing elevation of Korea's national status in the world, the importance of Korean Teaching as a Foreign Language has become on high demand.
Accordingly, lots of efforts and research have been put in to expand research areas in promoting as well as improving Korean teaching methods. The focus now has shifted from the education of basic communication skills to the instillation of cultural knowledge and literary sophistication.
In this respect, this thesis aims to improve the learners' linguistic, literary, cultural efficiency by using the Korean novels. For this purpose, the first part observes the previous studies on using Korean novels in Korean Teaching as a Foreign Language to analyze the strengths as well as the weaknesses. The then examines the educational models for using novel texts based on the existent theories to propose a desirable teaching-learning process. The final part introduces 'Mother and a Guest' by Joo Yo-seob as a target literature. There are three reasons for this choice. First, the text is easy to draw interests from the learners since its topic is broad enough to arouse sympathy from people in different countries. Second, it enjoys wide popularity as literary masterpiece in both Korean literature society and public mass media. Third, the novel contains many features which are uniquely Korean.
The suggested education plan for the novel consists of five periods. The first period will focus on drawing the interests from the learner by suggesting the main topic and helping understand the context of the novel. During the second period, students will learn the basic plot of the novel by familiarizing themselves with the main characters, background, events, topics, and especially understand the timeline during the third period. The fourth period will use a drama made out of the novel's story and the fifth period will involve individual activities to help learners compare the drama and the novel in order to improve their understanding about the text.
The value of this thesis lies in targeting the advanced adult learners to elevate cultural literacy by using the novels. Although it has its own limitation in that it is not based on the experimental case study, it is expected to contribute to the social as well as cultural accumulation and raise the awareness of literary works.
