This study is aimed to exlore phonology of modern Mongolian and Korean language, and tried to compare simililarity and difference of those languages. The study also investigated proper transcription of cyrillic alphabet to Hanguel. Both the Mongolian and the Korean languages belong to Altai language group possess some similar factors. Many Mongolian words had come into Korean language due to the mixture of two cultures during the dominacation period of the Great Mongolian Empire in 13th century.
Hanguel was created by king Sejung in 1443 and it was based on chinese character. It is considered almost perfect alphabet for transcribing korean language. As hanguel possesses many advantages, it can be useful to other languages which does not have their own characters.
Mongolians had been using their own traditional character which called ‘Uigurjin bichig’ until 1940. But after 1940, Mongolians started using cyrillic character due to political pressure of communist USSR. Nowadays, after democratic revolution in 1990, mongolians have been using those old character ‘Uigarjin bichig’ again, but it has not yet been used as official character.
Cyrillic alphabet, which is now being used in Mongolia as an official character, possesses letter of 35, whereas Hanguel has letter of 29. In both languages, some similar vowels and consonants were found. Besides, there are some consonants:.. and vowel..., which exist only in cyrillic alphabet. In this study, transcription ways of cyrillic to Hanguel were discussed. Above consonants and vowels, those exist only in cyrillic alphabet, are difficult to express by using Hanguel. This difficulty was discussed by various workers, eventhough there is no proper way to transcribe them by using hanguel alphabet.
Both the countries have a friendly relation with each other and is expanding in the fields of language and culture, so it is important to find a proper transcription way. As many Koreans visit Mongolia and wish to learn Mongolian language, finding proper transcription system from cyrillic to hanguel will be helpful to Koreans for studying Mongolian language in a short time.
