When it comes to teaching Korean as a foreign language, education for proverbs is essential. They can be mistaken that learning Korean is only about learning some vocabularies and grammars, however, learning Korean also refers to learning Korean cultures for communicating and picking up the language. If somebody does not understand Korean cultures, they will not be able to understand the meaning of Korean proverbs which leads to considerable difficulty in communicating with others. Proverbs are special languages that contain one country's historical, social and cultural backgrounds.
As us known, there are many kinds of proverbs , such as animal proverbs, women' proverbs, food proverbs and so on. At first, food proverbs have been chosen, for food can be considered as a very important part in our daily life and food cultures are one of a country's key cultures .
Then educational food proverbs should be chosen. It is better to choose proverbs that are commonly used in Korean society as those proverbs help them to communicate more efficiently and fluently and their academic levels should also be considered as those commonly used proverbs may be too hard for some of them due to their academic levels and they might lose their interest in learning. As a result, educational food proverbs are chosen as 23 from universities of 7 in Korea, such as Pusan University of Foreign Studies , Seoul University and so on. The 23 proverbs are divided into two levels- an intermediate level and an advanced level. There are about 70% of proverbs at the intermediate level so food proverbs at the intermediate level are chosen to make a study for teaching. Then the 23 proverbs are divided into two parts. One is the part about the rice cake. One is the part about the others except the rice cake. The ones about the rice cake take about 57% in the 23 proverbs, so when analysing food proverbs, we should focus on the ones about the rice cake by analysing its positive meanings and its negative meanings. When teaching the food proverbs for foreigners, we should teach proverbs which contain vocabularies that represent Korean cultures and compare them with their own countries'.
After choosing the 23 educational food proverbs and analysing them, the concrete teaching method should be composed. All of them cannot be composed at one time, so only one of them should be chosen to make a concrete explanation which is divided into five parts presentation, explanation of the meaning, exercise, practice, supplementation and deepening. For explanation of the meaning and practice, the method of comparison of Korean and Chinese is used for teaching. Also, for supplementation and deepening, the method of comparison of Korea and China's cultures is used for teaching.
Choosing methods and ways of teaching proverbs for language education may differ according to learner's educational backgrounds and teacher' abilities. To give an efficient lesson for teaching proverbs for language education, the leaners should practice many times and make sure each learner can use the proverb in the right place at the right time rather than just memorizing them. More specialized research should take place first for this kind of practice and also study texts which are combined with vocabularies, grammars and cultural education should be developed.
