This aims to set criteria for analyzing drama scenes in Korean education, and to suggest ways of selecting scenes according to educational purpose. “Hanryu”, or the Korean Wave, has boomed in the 1990s, having a big influence in popularizing the Korean language throughout the world. With an increasing number of learners who wish to learn Korean, thanks to the “Korean fever”, many people have tried to use movies or dramas as their class materials. As a result, a variety of theses on Korean education using multimedia has sprung up, but there has been no discussion on which scenes should be selected for each educational purpose. Since some teachers have failed to use drama scenes appropriately for the right educational purpose, they have encountered a variety of difficulties in classes which require using dramas.
In addressing the above mentioned problems, chapter one presents the purpose of this , the process, and ways dramas can be used in education.
Chapter two shows how to apply drama and its educational value in teaching and learning. Three main areas are addressed: pragmatics, linguistic culture, and lexis and grammar, such as listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Chapter three explains how to select appropriate dramas in learning Korean. Since the purpose of giving a lecture using dramas is to maximize the features of dramas, there are factors that should be considered, regardless of class purpose. In this perspective, this classifies analytic criteria of drama scenes into pragmatic, locutionary and nonverbal factors.
On the basis of the above-mentioned criteria, chapter four classifies a season of the Korean drama, ‘Hate or Love’ into 44 scenes. Each scene is analyzed according to pragmatic, locutionary and nonverbal factors. An appropriate drama scene has been selected to illustrate each of these factors, and suitable lesson plans have been made.
The study develops criteria for selecting scenes in Korean dramas, and will help improve the teaching resources for the teaching of Korean as a foreign language.
