As the degree and the scope of using 3D characters have been expanded in overall industries such as games, virtual reality and animation, the importance of 3D characters’effective motions, presentation of facial expression and speech embodiment has been getting greater. This study was conducted focusing on ‘speech’ and ‘facial expression’ which are most influential among the characters’ communication system. Since animators use lots of time and labor in embodying facial expression or speech when making 3D characters, this study attempted to establish the system to support the animators. The CELE system is composed of three parts, first, 3d characters’ words embodiment, second, 3D characters’ emotion embodiment system and third, 3D characters’ integrated system of words and facial expressions.
First, 19 Hangeul consonants, 21 Hangeul vowel were classified according to the type of mouth shape and then 10 typical mouth shape patterns were extracted. The ‘3D Character Speech Embodiment System’,in which the animator can immediately confirm the mouth shape after a word is inputted when the animator expresses the characters’ speech by applying the typical mouth shape patterns composed of two consonants (bilabials and other sounds), and eight vowels (ㅏ, ㅓ, ㅗ, ㅜ, ㅐ, ㅔ,ㅡ, ㅣ) to 3D characters, was developed.
Second, the models of sentiments such as pleasure and displeasure, awakening and sleeping and eight typical emotion adjectives were extracted through theoretical inquiries. Also the types of facial muscles and the methods of muscle exercise were investigated. In the case studies, in the first analysis, performers’ expression images were analyzed in the aspects of physical movement of linear, plane and circular muscles, and in the second analysis, muscle movement were analyzed according to patterns by using the AU combination of FACS, and through these analyses facial expression patterns were extracted. The "3D Character Facial Expression Embodiment System", in which the animator can embody the changes in emotion-muscles movement of 3D characters on a real time basis by applying the results of muscle movement patterns to 3D characters, was developed.
Third, in order to examine the changing relationships among mouth shapes which embody facial expressions and pronunciation, the changes in mouth shape patterns were examined after having the actors perform the same speech in accordance with eight emotion adjectives. It can be seen from the results of the analysis that mouth shape patterns are changed depending on changes in facial expressions. Facial expression muscles, which change for expression of emotion, acted not only on muscles around eyes which exert influence mainly on expressing emotion but also on the mouth shape pattern for pronunciation, and showed differences from the basic pronunciation shape patterns. The "3D Character Speech and Facial Expression Integration System, in which the animator can embody the mouth shape based on the 3D characters’ emotion on a real time basis by applying the results of applying the mouth shape patterns connected with facial expressions to 3D characters, was developed.
The CELE system is expected to have effects as a form of expression conception when the animator is in the stage of working to visualize facial expression and speech of 3D characters. In other words, it is expected to more efficiently be utilized in the production process of 3D animation characters that are quipped with technical perfection and power of expression, since the expression methods official expression to express the emotion of more efficient 3D animation characters can easily be applied and the methods of embodying the mouth shapes that are necessary for speech embodiment can be utilized.
