This study aims to examine the comprehensibility and readability through Gospels and Psalms. This thesis deals with some kinds of difficulties and questions from the target reader's point of view in reading the Bible. And this study emphasizes dynamic equivalence than formal equivalence in translation progress. Dynamic equivalence is more faithful to the context than to words in pragmatics. In other words, it is based on the idea of the target readers' age, cultural background, knowledge level and acceptability. So doing, I propose the Bible translation principles of World Bible Association. In order to search the examples of Gospels, I examine how the meanings of Greek Bible on the source text is translated into Korean Bibles and English Bibles by comparing each version's sentences.
Chapter 2 deals with the definition of the comprehensibility and readability by proposing translation theories, explains the purpose of translation and translation progress in terms of accuracy, efficiency and functions. It adds the history of World Bible translation and Korean Bible translation as well. This chapter gives us the necessity of considering target readers. In addition, this chapter introduces the world Bible history and Korean Bible history
Chapter 3 discusses questions of Gospels and Psalms and shows examples that keep target readers from reading easily. In order to present evidences of confusing elements to target readers and the difficulties of understanding original meaning, this chapter cites the Greek Bible for Gospels, searches each cases. Their cases are categorized into six parts - Name and Honorification, Names of diseases, Monetary unit, Concept of time, Psalms, Others. In comparing various versions with regards to their expression, this chapter discusses whether the source texts are translated properly for the sake of target readers' understanding or not.
In results from the examples, the last chapter summarizes all these points. Bible translation constantly needs to translate more easily and focus on the target readers. Comprehensibility and readability can contribute to produce better translation. To promote the Bible comprehensibility and readability, translator should consider various elements. In order to create a comprehensible equivalence between the source text and the target text, it is necessary to consider target readers.
