Second language learners tend to transfer the linguistic knowledge of their native language to a target language when they learn the target language. When their native and target language differ from each other, negative transfer called interference results, and this negative transfer often makes it difficult for them to effectively learn the target language. The purpose of this study is to investigate errors made by Korean learners of English in using English transitive and intransitive verbs under the influence of Korean transitivity interference, to analyze the aspect and cause of the errors, and finally to suggest some useful pedagogical implications for learning and teaching English in secondary schools in Korea.
For this study, 70 first grade students of a high school in Chungbuk Province were surveyed, and their answers to the test of English transitivity were analyzed. The test and the analysis of English transitivity were done by the questionnaire of 11 English sentences, which often cause students many mistakes and errors in their language use.
The results and findings of this study show that the errors were mainly caused by the subjects' native language interference. Korean learners of English are not sure what kinds of grammatical categories English transitive verbs have for their complements. They mainly rely on the translation of Korean verbs and then transfer their meanings directly into English, which results in ungrammatical English sentences.
Based on these results and observations, this study suggests that English teachers should help Korean learners utilize English transitive verbs in the context of sentences. This means that the subcategorization relationship of the verb should be elaborately taught to them so that they can fully understand the appropriate usage of verbs in English sentences. This study also suggests that it is of utmost importance to study and teach structural and semantic differences between Korean and English.
