This provided an objective methodology which can diagnose and prescribe the KFL text books through syntactic dimension. Although many macroscopic studies have analyzed the structural fundamentals of Korean language textbooks, there are few microscopic studies about the sentences used within various levels of conversational practice. I hypothesize that the higher level text books will have more sophisticated sentences than lower level ones. However, nobody knows if this is really the case. Therefore I have analyzed sentences from the text books, levels 1 to 4 published by Yonsei and Sogang University Press, from the syntactic point of view, namely focusing on the diversity and complexity of sentences.
The methodology for this study is introduced in chapter 2. I used Analytic grammar for analyzing the diversity and complexity of sentences. First, Analytic grammar is proposed by Uisu Kim(2008) to create a syntactically-tagged corpus in Korean and used to parse sentences in the text books. This methodology does not generate or explain sentences like Generative grammar, but only analyzes sentences and shows the structure and syntactic features through the alphabet and Arabic numerals. Second, the value of the diversity and complexity of sentences is calculated by 8 standard tables types, ‘[AE], [ACE], [ABE], [ACCE], [ABCE], [ACCCE], [ABCCE], [ABCCCE]'.
Chapter 3 and 4 explain the specific sentence analysis procedure. All the sentences in 「Yonsei Korean」 and 「Sogang Korean」 were analyzed into the 3 different aspects, ‘matrix sentence', ‘complex sentence' and ‘matrix sentence / complex sentence', and the each part was described by the diversity and complexity of sentences.
Chapter 3 explains how some specific types of sentences are extracted from the “main conversation" section in「Yonsei Korean」(level 1 to 4) and the value of the diversity and complexity of sentences was found. With these outcomes I evaluated the “main conversation" followed by each lesson, chapter, and level, and suggested some ways of improvement. I found that the degree of syntactic difficulty in「Yonsei Korean 2」is gradually increased as chapters went on, but the degree of syntactic difficulty in「Yonsei Korean 3」kept going up and down relatively to level 2. 「Yonsei Korean 2」is most likely in need of syntactic modification.
Chapter 4 explains how some specific types of sentences are extracted from the “main conversation" section in「Sogang Korean」(level 1 to 4) and the value of the diversity and complexity of sentences was calculated. Unlike 「Yonsei Korean」, 「Sogang Korean 1」is the text in which the degree of syntactic difficulty is gradually increased as chapters progressed, and 「Sogang Korean 2」is most likely in need of syntactic modification.
At the end of chapter 4, I point out that those two text books were made according to different objectives.「Yonsei Korean」is a sentence pattern-centered text book where the degree of sentence difficulty increases as the learning progresses. However the sentences in the “main conversation" section in「Sogang Korean」are frequently repeated and, in many cases, the degree of sentence difficulty doesn't gradually increase along with the levels.
This concluded by mentioning the necessity of analyzing 「Yonsei Korean」and「Sogang Korean」level 5 and 6. Those texts will be analyzed soon in order to provide a complete survey of sentence difficulty within the full course of Korean language instruction. By analyzing the degree of sentence difficulty through all levels, 1 to 6, we will be able to better assess which course materials have been syntactically well-organized. Further investigation of other major Korean language text books using Analytic grammar could be helpful for evaluating text books and provide insight for improving the effectiveness of future Korean language texts.
