This dissertation purports to ascertain the significant functionality of regional dialects in novel literature, analyze existing translation strategies of regional dialects through case studies in order to provide systematic and efficient translation strategies for Korean translators when translating regional dialects contained in English novels into Korean. In this regard, this explores following questions: first, the functions and significance of regional dialects employed in novel literature; second, the translation strategies applied in rendering regional dialects in English novels into Korean and characteristics the strategies have.
It is of notable interest that while regional dialects in English novels are applied by author in an attempt to provide specific functions or effects, subjective and unsystematic translation strategies are implemented by translators. As a consequence, original functionalities and effects of regional dialects in ST are attenuated or even lost in TT. Regional dialects furnish a novel with a variety of elements ranging from realistic description of colorful life in rural districts to an efficient enhancer for features of characters in novels.
In an effort to evaluate the efficiency of existing translation strategies, this analyzes Korean translation of regional dialects in English novels from three STs―Tess of the d'Urbervilles, The grapes of wrath and The adventures of Huckleberry Finn―and 13 TTs. This dissertation comprises four chapters: Introduction (Chapter 1), Sociolinguistics and Dialects (Chapter 2), Translation Strategies and Case Studies of Regional Dialects in English novel literature(Chapter 3), and Conclusion(Chapter 4).
Chapter 1 presents the aim, the motivation of the research, the review of previous studies, the research questions and methodology, as well as the anticipated contribution of the study, among other things. Chapter 2 looks through definitions, features and relations of sociolinguistics and dialects, as well as functions of dialects in novel literature. Chapter 3 introduces translation strategies and case studies of regional dialects in English novels translated into Korean. Chapter 4 summarizes the results of the study, acknowledges the limitation of the study and presents potential future research topics.
The author hopes the research will contribute to triggering further discussions on the translation of regional dialects in English novels and to offering systematic guidelines for those in the translation profession.
