With recent increases in the number of female married immigrants, much research of Korean education for them has been undertaken in terms of speaking and listening skills for survival so far. Since no previous study about reading skills has been conducted, there is a need to further development of research not only to teaching listening and speaking skills but also reading skills for them for their various role for adaptation in Korea.
This thesis aimed to develop teaching methodology of Korean reading skills focused on marred immigrants. Before developing reading textbooks for them, it is necessary to analyze their needs ahead.
For this purpose, this study first examines learners' strategy usage for reading. Then learners' needs of text type and genre were investigated. A total 173 learners of Korean language institutions for married immigrants were surveyed using Self-Report Questionnaire from SILL; Strategy Inventory for Language Learning(Oxford, 1990) which is reorganized to survey reading skills. In addition needs analysis about text types is conducted in terms of 4 questions; most often read, most difficult to read, want to learn most, and want to read by oneself most. The survey is conducted in Seoul and Kyoung-ki province as these cities contain 47% which is the highest ratio of total foreign immigrants population.
As a theoretical background, among the factors related to reading comprehension; text- and reader-based factors are reviewed. Text-based factors most frequently considered in assessing text difficulty include, text topic, text organization, text type and genre and so on. Reader-based factors that play a significant role in text comprehension include background schemata related to the text topic, cognitive and meta-cognitive reading strategies. Among them, language learning strategy and text types; especially a narrative text and an explanatory text are the basis of a survey for this thesis.
The specific research questions for the study are as follows.
1) What is most frequent used strategy and least used strategy?
2) Is relationship between reading strategies usage and the period of residence correlative?
3) What kind of text type the learners need in sequence?
4) Is there a difference between period of residence and period of Korean learning in needs of reading text type?
Hypothesis (1) Depending on the period of residence the needs for text type varies from non-fiction to fiction.
Hypothesis (2) Depending on the period of Korean learning the needs for text-type varies from explanatory text to narrative text.
The results of the analysis are summarised as follows:
1) Most frequently used out of all the 7 strategies was the social strategy(average 3.66 out of 5 scores) which is a role to compensate for the limit of learners reading proficiency. It indicates that using a social strategy is the characteristic of married immigrants unlike other Korean learners such as ones of academic purpose.
2) The results of one-way Anova analysis showed that among two variables, period of residence as almost statistically significant (p <.042). Another variable, pre-educational experience was not significant. Therefore it can be argued that respondents' reading strategies usage is related to the period of residence.
3) The results of the analysis showed that the two groups were different in their demand of text types. The group of more than 4 years' residence read most frequently fairy tales, news and magazine articles and internet materials. Another group of less than 3 years' residence read most frequently simplified expository text types such as bulletin boards, leaflets and dictionaries and so on.
The following conclusions were made based on the results:
It arranges in the lesson procedures to be applied in considering the social strategy in each stage of reading texts. It also suggests strategic activities which are divided from difficulty of text to each stage needed when reading.
Therefore it is expected that follow-up research in Korean language education are required to help married immigrants' adaptation here in Korea.
