The number of universities in China that have a department of
Korean language is dramatically increasing each year. As of June
2009, 72 universities in China offer Korean language courses to
local students. Culture education is one of the most important parts
in teaching foreign languages. Systematic culture education at the
early stage will not only motivates students but also enables them
to use the language more precisely. In teaching Korean as a foreign
language, we should lay more emphasis on teaching culture.
Despite its increasing importance, not many universities in China provide systematic culture education. Most of Chinese universities
have a tendency to offer less culture education to students at
beginner's level than intermediate or advanced levels.
The objective of this study is to examine better ways of teaching Korean culture to students of departments of Korean language in Chinese universities. To do so, the current state of Korean culture education in Chinese universities are examined while at the same time learners' needs are analyzed. Based on the acquired data
through the analysis, this study aims to make constructive
suggestions for developing culture education text books for the first year and second year students and to seek more effective and
interesting ways of teaching culture.
