The purpose of this study is to help learners with learning vocabulary and improve their fluency by making learners recognize collocations on delexicalized verbs. For the purpose, this study consists of two parts. First, the distribution aspect of delexical structure in 5 middle school English textbooks was examined. Second, two tests about the delexicalized collocation were given to 35 students in third grade in middle school. The tests included a total of 36 questions that ask collocation expressions of delexicalized verbs such as do, get, have, make, take. To raise the recognition of delexical structure the students spent 5 minutes more over learning the verb collocations in their regular classes for three weeks before the second test. The researcher found the following results through the test sheets.
First, delexicalized verb / noun collocations above mentioned were appeared 80 times in the middle school English textbooks. It shows that is often used in English expressions. The first test about the collocations showed the rate of correct answer 22.74%. The low rate of the correct answer indicated that the errors were caused by overgeneralization, L1 influence and learner factors.
Before the second test, the learners joined collocation learning activities like collocation map, collocation practice, finding collocation, collocation paring etc. The second test resulted in the rate of correct answer 56.42%. Comparing with the tests, learners' collocation recognition was raised by 27.72%. That was not a considerable improvement.
This results suggest that collocation should be taught in proper context for learners to pay attention to the usage of the collocation. First, the most of lexical items is used as the form of predictable chunks. Therefore, it is necessary to teach collocation as a unit or chunks for learners can have a good command of collocation. Second, Delexical structure should be taught explicitly with other collocations. It may be helpful for learners to raise collocation recognition and improve their writing and reading ability. As a result, this can be helpful to the improvement of communication competence.
