This research is intended to suggest a set of meaning ranges as one of the educational plans on modality expression in the Korean language education.
Learners experience confusion in the middle level where grammar education centered on shape in the beginning level is changed to being focused on meaning. Therefore, the purpose of this research is for learners themselves to form a system of grammatical expressions by having learners in the middle level set the meaning ranges while systemically presenting sentence patterns within the range.
First in chapter I, the necessity for setting meaning ranges in middle level grammar education was suggested, and a set of meaning ranges called judgment modality in modality expression education was emphasized.
In chapter II, the standard of judgment modality was established by examining the concept and the judgment modality about modality and controversial expressions.
In chapter III, 4 college textbooks were randomly selected and analyzed in order to study the characteristics of judgment modality expressions appearing in Korean language textbooks.
In chapter IV, after dividing sentence structures of judgment modality into distinctions of meaning and shape, those distinctions of meaning and shape appearing in individual sentence patterns were examined. The sentence structures of judgment modality were studied regarding the function of judgment modality appearing through the meaning analysis of dependant nouns in the form of ‘attributive word termination / dependent noun / predicate’. The characteristics of shape were examined centering on the distinction of precedent paragraphs and predicates of following paragraphs focusing on dependent nouns.
In chapter V, by using the characteristics of meaning systems and shapes formed through meaning analyses of sentence structures of judgment modality, plans for utilization in Korean language education were represented.
This research seeks to place the significance in the effort placed on systemically suggesting to learners a setting of meaning ranges and following grammatical clauses as a plan for education regarding modality expressions mainly appearing in the middle and high levels of Korean language education. Our remaining task can be said to be suggesting more effective study methods through more interest and research on modality expressions in Korean language education.
