As Information and Knowledge is of importance in the 21st century, various kinds of researches are going on in the field of English Education according to this mainstream. Especially, computer-based teaching programs are promising as they are applying to the class in practice and need more efforts to develop in the future. We'll have come to a deadlock in teaching English unless the process of distinguishing meanings by speaking and listening takes place in advance. Even though the importance of teaching speaking is recently stressed in Korea, teaching pronunciation is disposed to be disregarded. However, it is extremely important to teach the pronunciation of individual sounds in the aspect of learning the phonetic and the sound system when learning a new language. Though this process seems a bit complicated, it is necessary to understand the articulating process and to compare and analyze the sound system in order to teach English properly. Therefore, we should identify possible errors in articulating to teach English pronunciation systematically.
Majority of Koreans have difficulty in sounding and distinguishing similar English sounds from others. The main reason is the influence of mother tongue, Korean. When we pronounce English vowels which are excluded from Korean vowels, we can run into this difficulty, and that's because of the impact of Korean tone. In Korea, it has been emphasized to acquire the pronunciation of English consonant sounds which are not included in mother tongue, but vowels excluded from mother tongue has rarely been dealt with. As this tendency has already been stronger, it's hard to correct.
Thus, phonetic investigation is required because it is indispensable for teaching English pronunciation to discern as well as analyze vowel systems more effectively and scientifically. In this point, we can get excellent results by applying computer-based learning programs which can make investigation research more feasible. Front vowels /i,ı /, /ε , æ / and back vowels / u, υ / are the toughest ones for Koreans to articulate. In this thesis I'd like to think about the causes and the problems in occurring errors when sounding vowels by comparing and analyzing vowel groups mentioned above with computer-based learning programs. I also intend to consider their solutions and the effect of computer-based learning programs used in the investigation. Because a vowel is the most essential component in deciding the pronunciation feature, I selected complex vowels / i, ı /, /ε , æ /, / u, υ /, and I'd like to look into the fact that Koreans are able to discern these vowel sounds accurately, which is the purpose of this study.
