The goal of this study is to explore in depth the quantitative change of translated text(TT) in Korean subtitle translation of English movies and its differences among film genres. Subtitles are a specific form of TT, which is the translation of not just written text, but of many different codes including audio and visual signs. The study sets up five hypotheses to statistically demonstrate the universality of TT contraction in Korean subtitle translation of Hollywood movies and the difference of quantitative change among film genres. This study deals with four film genres: action, love/romance, mystery/thriller, and animation. The hypotheses are, (1) TT contraction in subtitle translation is a universal phenomenon, (2) TT contraction rates vary with film genre, (3) Films in action genre show the highest contraction rates, (4) Films in love/romance genre show the lowest contraction rates, (5) Films in love/romance and mystery/thriller show contraction rates in between those of love/romance and action genres.
This dissertation comprises five parts: introduction, theoretical background of the study, research design and methodology, statistical analysis, and conclusion. Chapter 1, or the introduction, deals with goals, motives, scope, and expected contributions of this study.
Chapter 2, or the theoretical background of the study lays the theoretical foundation by taking a look at relevant theories and studies on audiovisual translation(AVT). This chapters also deals with the brief history of film making, types of AVT including such conventional types as dubbing, subtitling and voice over(VO) and newly emerging AVT types such as surtitling and audio description. Constraints peculiar to subtitle translation are also mentioned in this chapter. This chapter looks at techniques employed by subtitle translators to meet the constraints and convey the core message of ST. These techniques include chunking-up, chunking-down, and chunking sideways. This chapter also deals with change in message in the process of subtitle translation. This chapter contains a pilot study as a preliminary research to explore the quantitative change in TT and its resulting message changes.
Chapter 3 is about the corpus of the study, its compilation and measurement units. Unlike other previous studies of this sort, this study employs three measurement units: word, syllable, and character. The corpus of this study is gained from 120 films ranging over four genres of movies with each genre comprising 30 latest movies. Ten-minute footage of each film from 60:00 to 70:00 from the start of a movie is selected from which to transcribe English ST and Korean TT subtitles. The corpus is composed of 158,624 words, or 320,920 syllables, or 1,194,077 characters.
Chapter 4 introduces the statistical analysis of the corpus and shows scatter plots and correlations between contraction rates using three different measurement units.
Chapter 5 provides the conclusions of this study. It concludes that directions and degrees of quantitative change in subtitle translation varies according to what measurement units are employed. This chapter also points out the limitations of the study and proposes further research into this emerging new field of translation studies.
