The purpose of this study is to examine the errors that students make in the process of using <verb/noun> collocation and to suggest some effective ways on teaching <verb/noun> collocation, because <verb/noun> collocation type turned to be the most problematic among any other collocation types from the result of pre-research. According to Corder, learner's errors are significant because they provide researchers with the evidence of how language is learned or acquired and what strategies learners are employing.
Therefore, the collocation errors that students made in cloze-type collocation test were collected and identified. The subjects were 70 high school students. According to the error analysis of the collocation uses, many students were influenced by interference of native langue(or interlingual factors) and overgeneralization of target language rules(or intralingual factors). And these two major errors can be subcategorized into Korean literal translation and Korean associated translation for interference of native language, and synonymous verbs, delexicalized verbs and similar spelling or pronunciation for overgeneralization of target language rules, respectively.
As a result of this research, the most of collocation errors were caused by overgeneralization of target language rules(52.8%) rather than interference of native langue(9.4%), and the most subcategorized error source of overgeneralization of target language rules was delexicalized verbs. The students tend to use delexicalized verbs randomly without knowing the usage of each words or collocation, when they don't have any clue for collocation at all.
And the students' data were examined quantitatively on the basis of the answers of their collocation tests. The collocations with more than 90 percent of correct answers have Korean-English literal translation and frequently used ones in the textbook. In addition, the collocations with less than 30 percent of correct answers have errors dominantly caused by overgeneralization of delexicalized verbs. In accordance with the results, when the teacher teach collocations to the students, they should teach the chunks to them and should make students recognize the collocation uses of delexicalized verbs plus noun. On the basis of the findings, a variety of exercises and activities were suggested for teaching and learning <delexicalized verbs / noun> collocation.
