The purpose of this study was to examine how Korean derivative words could be educated in a more interesting and effective way in consideration of Korean vocabulary system.
It is vocabulary that advanced learners who learn a second language find it especially difficult to acquire. It's attempted in this study to delve into in which way Korean language learners should be taught to enlarge their Korean vocabulary by using the principles of word formation, especially by using derivative words. Derivative words produce ample vocabularies owing to their morphological characteristic that combines an affix and the root of a word, and it consequently seemed to be advisable to make use of derivative words to enlarge vocabulary.
Korean language textbooks were analyzed to find out the state of education about derivative words. 14 textbooks were investigated in this study, which included four textbooks of Seoul National University, six of Yonsei University and four of Ewha Women's University. As a result, it's found that the textbooks didn't present common affixes. Although the textbooks were written to provide the same education, they included different vocabularies, which indicated that a more careful selection of affixes was necessary to ensure the efficiency of education about derivative words.
The affixes included in the textbooks were categorized, and then affixes that appeared in two or more of the textbooks were selected as what should be taught in Korean language education. 82 affixes were selected, which involved nine prefixes and 73 suffixes. And then 909 derivative words were selected on that base according to vocabulary lists provided by studies on Korean language textbooks and by a on the selection of vocabulary for Korean education. The selected derivative words included 33 derivative prefixes and 876 derivative suffixes.
After the derivative words were selected, applicable teaching-learning methods were devised to teach the derivative words. In which direction they should be taught was considered by looking into how derivative words were educated in language arts class and whether there were any interdisciplinary similarities in teaching methods. Besides, the principles of derivative word education were briefly explained.
Five teaching-learning methods were presented in this study, which respectively used the meaning of affixes, Frayer model, games, semantic group and semantic feature. In the game-based teaching method, one of the five, it's attempted to change the lyrics of songs. All the teaching methods would contribute to maximizing the effect of instruction by igniting the interest and class participation of learners.
This study was expected to shed light on the position and importance of derivative words in Korean education. That was meaningful in that it extracted derivative words from Korean textbooks and determined the sphere of derivative words to be taught, and the findings might lay the solid groundwork for future research on the selection of affixes and derivative words that are appropriate at different learner levels.
Vocabulary enlargement is one of the great mandatory tasks in language education. There's no guarantee about the efficiency of the five teaching methods for vocabulary enlargement provided in this study, but if teachers make various attempts to be better ready for instruction, they will be able to offer more efficient and interesting lessons.
