The purpose of this thesis is to examine the differing methods of study employed by both Russian speakers who learn Korean and Korean speakers who learn Russian, and to distinguish the common and opposing features regarding the consonants between the Russian and Korean languages.
Korean emphasises the vowel sounds while Russian emphasises the consonants sounds. So the writer analyses and ascertains the differences and similarities of consonants, phonetic systems, syllable structures and phonological rules between Russian and Korean.
The writer observes what difficulties and similarities exist when each student learns the consonant sounds of the other language. Also this study aims to help both Russian and Korean learners to understand more easily the system of Russian and Korean consonant sounds.
Firstly, in chapter II, contrast of Russian and Korean constant sounds : the comparison of the places and manners of articulation, the relation between voiced and voiceless sounds and the relation between palatal and soft palate are surveyed.
In chapter III, phonological rules : The phonological rules of Russian and those of Korean are surveyed.
In chapter IV, interference phenomeon caused as practicing Russian consonants and other common mistakes are surveyed.
In chapter V, the education methods of Korean pronunciation for native Russian speakers learning Korean are surveyed.
Through this contrastive analysis I have arrived at the following conclusions:
Whoever attempts to learn a foreign language often experiences some difficulty in pronouncing the other tongue with the ease and fluency of a native speaker. It is likely to be the pronunciation that is the most important factor, or obstacle, in communicating fluently.
Comparing the consonant sounds between Russian and Korean, understanding the problems caused with pronunciation and acquisition encountered by both nationalities will provide an advantage to those language learners.
Therefore, not only should learners basically recognize the difference between the phonetic system of Russian and that of Korean but they should also bear in mind the lack of need to pronounce the way of each languages sounds system.
While this thesis does suggest a better way of studying for both Korean and Russian learners there are limitations in the materials and s, and crucially the suggested study not having been implemented in the field. Therefore, going forward, the studies will continue regarding Russian and Korean constant sounds. At last, I hope this thesis will help students of both Russian and Korean in noticing the pitfalls faced by each and that through this make it easier for all concerned.
