This study is an analysis of drama therapy works for Chinese University students who have social anxiety symptoms, and focuses on the analysis of the effect of drama therapy based on western tradition of Chinese culture and of the operating mechanism of drama therapy in order to activate. The researcher proceeded an experiment on 6 University students in a university in Hu Nan province, China, with control group of 6 for 20 times in total. Social anxiety and avoidance scale (SAD) and interaction anxiety scale (IAS) were used as pre- and post- test tools to evaluate symptom relief results. The test result is as following. First, the effect of grade, sex, and such things on social anxiety of Chinese university students was confirmed. According to the research of the researcher, the anxiety of university students appeal to be ranked as junior>freshman>senior> sophomore. When freshman newly enters a new atmosphere effects greatly on all areas of their lives. Freshman has to widen their relationships with others, and because it is not easy to be done within a short period of time, it is normal that they have anxiety on making relationships with others. Sophomore students have the least amount of social anxiety because they do not have pressure on entering university or finding a job. Junior students have to decide their future path whether to study more in graduate school or find job. Students who choose to find jobs have to put all their effort on exams, so they no more have spare time for the activities to make relationships. These students feel a big gap between the society and university, and most of them feel they are weak regarding relationships. Moreover after they experience lots of failure, they are humiliated and scared of meeting others. Such scared feeling increases their social anxiety. Senior students have plenty of social experience, and they completed a basic stop for changing from a student to a member of the society, they have very low level of social anxiety. Moreover, their background of only child exposes them more easily to social anxiety. In modern Chinese society there is a special situation of planned delivery which caused most of university students to be only child, and because their parents are mostly double-income family, the only child was mostly at home alone or cared by grandparents. Not having many friends to play with or much interaction with others from when they were young and had too much love from grandparents, that they are introspective, selfish and feel uneasy to make relationships. The anxiety is greater with men than women. In modern Chinese society, social responsibility of men is greater that their stress in society or at home is great as well. University students face a turing point to become a member of society and male students feel more pressure of the expected social role than female students. As a result, their social anxiety increases. This is why social anxiety scale of male students is greater than female students. Second, adequate play treatment program showed high efficiency of releasing social anxiety of Chinese university students. First step of play game increased sense of kinship and trust, and also caused competitiveness and desire to get acknowledged among other participants and therapists. Moreover, they understood more of themselves by watching others, gained courage and set resolution about changes. By analyzing background, characters, obstacles, helpers and ending of 6 pieces of stories, the reasons for social anxiety of the participants were found and this was used to make plays which the protagonist could bring out the causes of the social anxiety symptoms buried in the mind. Most of the participants found out the main reasons belong to family background, such as adoption and divorce. The result of using Chinese myth, NyuWa story, based on self-psychology principle, target transfer relationship was formed within the participants and they were able to maintain internalization by practicing plays and rebuild themselves. Through the NyuWa myth participants could make changes of themselves from intimidated to be active. Drama therapy program in this study made the participants possible to find their role models by simulating plays on refusal, leader, interview, and the opposite sex, and imitating these situations. By simulating, imitation of a role model to solve problems were also done. Then, when they reproduced the social situations the participants could well deal with the problems they face. Third, the participants were scored over 45 in SADS and IAS test, however, after the program their score decreased to 30s. Therefore, the effectiveness of play treatment program on releasing their social anxiety has been proved. The significance of this study is that the current status of social anxiety of Chinese university students were understood, and that it is proved play treatment program using Chinese myth could release their symptoms. In the future, accomplishment of art treatment based on Chinese culture will be verified in many ways.
