우리나라 악기 산업의 위축 배경으로 국내외의 악기 수요가 급감한 것을 지적하고 있다. 통상 가구당 피아노 보급률이 25% 정도가 되면 피아노를 구매하는 경유보다 교체수요만 발생하면서 판매량이 정체기에 접어든다고 본다. 미국, 유럽뿐만 아니라 한국, 일본 등의 선진국은 이미 20% 선을 넘은 것으로 분석된다. 또한 여가시간을 컴퓨터 게임 등을 하면서 보내는 사람들이 증가하는 등 여가문화의 양태가 달라진 영향이 크다는 의견도 있다. 신흥 시장인 중국이 성장세를 이어가고 있긴 하지만 이것도 자국산 중저가 피아노 제품이 높은 점유율을 차지하고 있다. 국내 악기산업이 침체국면에서 벗어나기 위한 발전방안을 모색하기 위한 분석이 필요한 시점이라 판단되어 문헌연구 및 사례분석을 실시하였으나, 이마저도 자료부족 및 기존연구가 미미한 실정이다. 이에 본 연구는 국내 악기산업의 발전방안을 모색하기 위한 기초자료로 활용하기 위하여 국내 악기산업의 발전과정을 토대로, 사례분석과 통계자료 및 문헌조사를 실시할 계획이다. 또한, 국내 악기산업의 발전방안을 모색하기 위해 소비자와 관련업종 종사자를 대상으로 한 실증분석의 방법을 사용하였다. 우리의 악기산업이 처한 대내외 무역환경을 극복하고 지속적인 수출증대를 도모하기 위해 정부차원의 적극적인 활성화 방안들이 강구돼야 하며, 그 구체적 방안은 수출상품의 고도화 및 품질 향상을 위해 노동의 질을 높이고, 자동화를 서두르며, 기술개발지원을 확대하고, 해외직접투자를 확대하며, 중소 악기생산업체의 투자환경을 개선하고, 수출시장을 다변화시키는 것이다.

Stagnation of the country's musical instrument industry indicates that demands for musical instruments have drastically declined from home and abroad. It is generally known that when the piano ownership rate per household has reached 25%, sales get into a stagnant phase with no demands occurring other than replacement demands rather than those for new purchases. Analyses show that the piano ownership rate has already reached a 20% mark in advanced economies such as Korea and Japan as well as the United States and Europe. Some ascribe the current status largely to shifts in the pattern of leisure culture with more and more people spending their leisure time doing computer games and the like. Though such a new power as China are maintaining the growth momentum, medium- and low-priced domestic pianos in China capture a high market share. Thinking that this is high time to analyze the current status of the sector in order to explore ways of breaking out of the stagnant phase of the domestic musical instrument industry toward continuous growth of the market, we embarked on literature studies and case analyses, finding the job highly limited due to lack of data and existing studies. This study conducted case analyses and surveys by means of statistics and literature study based on the development process of the domestic musical instrument industry to utilize them as basic data in exploring ways of developing domestic musical instrument industry. Besides, we employed an empirical analytical method, targeted at consumers and those engaged in related lines of business in order to explore ways of developing domestic musical instrument industry. The current study shows that positive revitalizing ways on the government level are required to overcome domestic and overseas trade environments the country's musical instrument industry is currently facing and promote expanded exports. Specifically, quality of labor should be lifted with quality improvement in view, automation accelerated, support for development of technology expanded, overseas direct investments expanded, investment environments for small and medium musical instrument industry improved and export markets diversified. For the musical instrument industry to be revitalized, the measures set out in the following should be devised: First, non-price competitiveness such as product upgrading and quality improvement should be enhanced in order to meet consumer needs ever diversified, individualized and upgraded. Second, protective trade barriers on the part of advanced economies should be overcome, overseas direct investments should be expanded on the level of protection of the existing market and development of new markets. Third, While effectively coming to grips with technology protective moves on the part of advanced countries, quality competitive power should be enhanced by means of producing musical instruments specifically for experts featuring quality materials and manual processing workmanship. As for electronic musical instruments for all purposes, instruments for both performance and non-performance should be produced with a view to inducing potential demands by means of developing, and investments in the development of technology should be revitalized accordingly. Fourth, price competitiveness should be enhanced through enhanced productivity and cost reduction. As for production of handmade musical instruments, the strategy should be reoriented toward concentration on delivery of small quantities coupled with high quality, and facilities automation should be made with prevention of labor-management disputes in mind along with development of technology in the non-performance instrument sector. Lastly, measures should also be explored that will ease the ever deepening manpower shortage phenomena and expand investments in the musical instrument industry in order to develop technology for the musical instrument industry as a whole and expand facilities in the sector.
