This study aims to investigate the actual preparation conditions and perceptions of the street dancers regarding the street dance battles. Furthermore, the result of this study will provide fundamental resource for the future academic researches that are related to the street dance battles. In this study, the street dancers in Seoul city were targeted, and a survey was conducted on 350 street dancers. The data collected from the survey was statistically analyzed by using PASW Statistic 18.0(spss 18.0).
The result of this study is as follows.
First, as the result of investigating street dancers’ general perceptions regarding the battle operation and environment, the following areas were all shown to have positive recognitions: importance of battle, necessity, and contribution of the battles to the advancement of street dance. For the reasons of participating in battles, the responses showed that they participate to communicate and exchange with other dancers. There also were divergent opinions among the street dancers, regarding the similarities between the street dance battles and sports competitions. The street dancers highly valued dancing in coordination with the music; and they were mostly concerned about the battles’ day of the week and judges. As the result of investigating battle operation and environment, the level of perception in battle operation, judging criteria, environment, and time of duration were all shown to be above average.
Second, as the result of investigating differences in the perceptions related to the battle operation and environment, based on the street dancers’ personal characteristics (gender and major), the following areas showed significant differences: necessity and meaning of battles, similarity between battles and sports competitions, importance factors, reasons for participating, battle operation, judging criteria, and environment. The importance of battles, considerations prior to battles, and the time of duration were all shown to have significant differences based on the responders’ majors.
Third, as the result of investigating the actual preparation conditions of the street dancers, the street dancers were shown to be concerned lightly to moderately prior to the battle. They were shown to prepare for the battles over the period of less than one week. In other cases, they did not have a set period of time or prepared whenever they can; or, they were always ready for the battles. The street dancers were mostly found to prepare for battles at their universities. When they prepare, they practiced dancing to any kinds of music. When they were asked if they set a specific goal as they prepare for the battle, they responded that it is likely to always. For having systematic practice plans, their responses were divergent. More than half of the street dancers referred to video recordings as they prepare for the battles, and mock battles were done.
Fourth, as the result of investigating the actual preparation conditions for the battles based on the street dancers’ personal characteristics (gender and major), there were significant differences in the following areas: being concerned of battle while preparing, duration of preparation for the battle, place for practicing, requesting instructors to teach, and the areas of focus while practicing. In terms of the goal-setting prior to attending the battles, there were significant differences based on the gender. For the systematic practice plans, there was a significant difference based on the majors.
Based on the result of this study, the following conclusion was derived.
First, as the general perception of the street dancers regarding the battles, the majority of the street dancers perceived that participating in battles was important and that the battles largely contribute to the advancement of the street dance. The street dancers perceive the battles as the arena of communication, and they participate in the battles in order to communicate and exchange with other dancers. For the battles, the dancers were mostly concerned about the day of the week and the judges. For the battle operation and environment, the street dancers had perceptions of above average in general.
Second, as the result of investigating differences in the general perception in relation to the street dancers’ personal characteristics (gender and major), the following areas were shown to have differences: necessity of battles, importance, meaning of battle, similarity between battles and sports competitions, importance factors, reasons for participating, battle operation, judging criteria, environment, and time of duration.
Third, as the result of investigating the actual preparation conditions among the street dancers, it was found that some dancers are not concerned about the battle prior to attending the battles. The street dancers generally prepare for the battles over less than one week; or they do not have a set period of preparation time, as they are always prepared whenever they have the time. Furthermore, when the street dancers prepare for the battle, it was not mandatory to set up a specific goal or have a systematic practice plan. The majority of the dancers referred to the video recordings as they prepare for the battles, and they practiced in mock battles. As the result of examining the actual preparation conditions of the street dancers, the preparation conditions were generally shown to be weak in terms of the time of duration, methods of preparation, and contents.
Fourth, as the result of investigating the differences in the actual preparation conditions based on the dancers’ personal characteristics (gender and major), there were differences in the following areas: being concerned about battle when preparing, time of duration for preparation, place of preparation, setting specific goal, having systematic practice plan, requesting instructors to teach, and the focus of the practice.
