[Abstract] A Study on the Tragic Images in Kim's Gee-taek Poems By Kim Sang-hyeon Department of Creative Writing Graduate School of Woosuk University Academic Adviser : Ahn Do-hyeon This manuscript studied on the tragic images in the poems by Kim Gee-taek, who established a peculiar school with his creative writing of poems observing the material mechanism progress persistently based on the inferential imagination. In the study on the tragic images in Kim's Gee-taek poems, the concepts of ‘the inferential imagination’ and ‘the material mechanism’ were set up and utilized to develop the argument efficiently. In Chapter II, the related discourse and the tragedy raised in the city, the poems on the tragedy were named ‘the tragic poems’ altogether. I’d like to say that the naming was inevitable to make the argument go on wheels because the term of the tragic poems has not usually been used in the academic circle. For the creative classification according to the contents of the tragic poems, ‘the Bipolar Aesthetics Logic on the criticism’ was set up based on ‘the theory of the aesthetic categories’ by Cho Dong-il, who devised the theory by accepting and organizing Nicolai Hartmann’s aesthetic theory. This manuscript tries to discuss the tragic poems in depth through the Bipolar Aesthetics Logic on the criticism, because the previous aesthetic theory has the limit in analyzing those poems : According to the previous aesthetic theory, the tragic poems can be discussed only within the domain of tragic beauty confined to quadrant 1. In the chapter of the tragic discourse in this manuscript, how to apply my new theory is shown with the diagrams. In addition, the origin and the features of the tragedy were reviewed by speculating the discourse of the tragedy. And then, the term of the tragic poems was used based on such a process above. There was the same process with the discourse of the image. However, it was not treated as much in depth as the discourse of the tragedy, because it is not the main point of the argument. Next, in the Urban Gloom: Paris and Seoul, Charles Baudelaire’s tragic poems and Kim's Gee-taek tragic poems were compared and analyzed. Charles Baudelaire can be said to have held the unrivaled position by writing very contemporary poems based on Paris of France in the transition period from modern times to contemporary times. Such comparison and analysis is quite meaningful because the two city, Paris and Seoul, got through similar changes with the logic of capitalism and both of the poets were interested in the alienated humans and their collapsing bodies in such environments. The characteristics of the tragic poems were investigated by means of such comparison and analysis. The presentation aspects of images in Kim's Gee-taek tragic poems of chapter III was classified into four kinds and analyzed. In the gloomy urbanite, ‘the existential’ of the human being was considered, which falls into ‘the existence’ in the urban life. In the tragedy of downtrodden animals, the tragic images of animals were considered which are killed for the human’s appetite. The movie term of hard-gore or snuff was borrowed in the process, which makes it easy to analyze the works. In this chapter, the poems were utilized describing well how the bodies of animals were destroyed by violence. In the projected objects, as a next step of the tragic images found in the human being and the animals, the urban contemporary people’s gloom in the ordinary objects was discussed. The objects in the poems are the objectified things to which the poet’s sensibility was projected as it is and the contemporary people’s tragic images could be considered through them. In paradoxical poems, it was noted that the tragedy did not play its role only as tragedy; it was sublimated into the high-dimensional energy with which one can tolerate the irrationalities of reality. Such paradoxical tragedy shows that Kim Gee-taek is not the poet who sings only the shade of the world; yet, further, he is a serious existentialist who tries to discover the sunny side of the world. Kim Gee-taek is the poet who studied deeply the tragic situations produced continually in the urban capital society by choosing the urban situations, especially Seoul, out of the world situations. He was a lonely warrior who played his trump card of the inferential imagination and the material mechanism to save the alienated world. His poetic words are dark and damp but they have a fine edge of the sword. His collections of poems are a series of cult films leaving the long lasting remembrance and the vivid impression. It was so much pleasure to discover the vibrant motion of life dreaming of the resurrection in the darkness that it has been the power to overcome the exhaustion of the investigation. Anticipating Kim's Gee-taek next collection, I’m inclined to open his old collections in my free time. In his collections, the elaborateness of the world established with his own eyes surprises the immature people who write and study poems. In his world, even the hunchback and the one choking himself stand in the center of the world for a moment. Keywords : tragic images. material mechanism. inferential imagination. urban gloom.
