The purpose of this study is to understand the experiences of university students at their twenties who participated in cherishing the memory of Sewol Ferry disaster and clarifying the truth about the disaster and what it means through the experiences of participating in cherishing the memory of Sewol ferry disaster. For that purpose, the study set three following research questions: First, what motivated the participants to make activities to cherish the memory of Sewol ferry disaster? Second, what are the activities participants experienced to cherish the Sewol ferry disaster? Third, what individual changes have occurred since the cherishing memory of Sewol ferry disaster. As for the methodology of the study, the researcher used Giorgi's phenomenological approach. The participants in this study were 6 students in total, 3 female students and 3 male students. The participants were 2 1st year , 1 2nd year , 1 3rd year, and 2 4th year students. The major varied according to the participants and there was one person who knew an acquaintance related to the victims of Sewol ferry disaster, two people knew each other, and three people who are not related to each other. In addition, 3 participants (one discontinued) experienced the cherishing the memory of sewol ferry disaster activity group, and the others experienced personal activities. The participants` activeness in this study (5 likert scale) were 2(normal), 3(active), 1(very active). They were asked to participate in a 120-150 minute session of personal interview and group interview which was recorded. All interview data on the participants’ descriptions were transcribed and analyzed as they were expressed. As a result of analyzing the whole context by interpreting the interview data and constructing semantic units, 305 subordinate meanings, 27 components, 9 themes and 3 categories were derived. The results are summarized as follows. First, in the category of 'All of us in Sewol ferry' was based on the occasion, motivation, and previous experiences of cherishing the memory of Sewol ferry disaster activities. The themes 'facing the Sewol disaster' and 'we will not stay' were derived from this category. At the outset, after hearing the news of the Sewol ferry disaster on April 16, 2014, their previous experience of personal trauma resulted to avoidance or sympathy. The Sewol ferry disaster has been reconstructed into a unique meaning to each individual, and the Sewol ferry disaster has been regarded as “my work”, not the work of others. In addition, they participated in cherishing the memory of Sewol ferry disaster in the expression of the behavior that I would not stay still for an unjust society. Second, in the process of cherishing the memory of Sewol ferry disaster activities, there were indifferent or sharp eyes in the surrounding community and society. However, books, music, and meetings to hear the pain and suffering of 416 families continued, and participation in cherishing the memory of Sewol ferry disaster activities indirectly contributed to the suffering of the disaster. 416 families, similar peers and people who participated in these cherishing the memory of Sewol ferry disaster activities gave fellowship and solidarity to each other. So, participants are to participate in the existing cherishing the memory of Sewol ferry disaster activities. They also planned and promoted various memorial activities. Third, participants who experienced cherishing the memory of Sewol ferry disaster activities showed some changes in their lives. First of all, positive perception of oneself who participated in the right thing by change of perception of oneself, search of career related to the Sewol ferry disaster and establishment of identity as a citizen. In addition, there was a change in the interpersonal relationship and the viewpoint of the old generation due to the difference of values to look at the Sewol ferry disaster. Despite the frustration and antipathy of the nation, there was also a an expectation for a society that takes care of a solidarity, a society that rescues life, and a society that communicates. Furthermore, the interest in the media information increased and discerned due to the increase of social interest and participants were interested not only in the Sewol ferry disaster but also on other social problems. Based on this, it can be said that the process of cherishing the memory of Sewol ferry disaster activity is the process of encountering and growing by remembering, that we have not forgotten and we will not stay still. This is an opportunity for participants to learn life by experiencing voluntary and subjective to cherishing the memory Sewol ferry disaster activities. This study is significant to the unique culture and experience of the 20`s through cherishing the memory of Sewol ferry disaster activities. Also, it examined the influence of the cherishing the memory of Sewol ferry disaster activities since and after the disaster.
