Byeong-ju Lee’s novels gained popularity through his own narrative strategy to communicate with the people in the style of the popular novels. Accordingly, this analyses the popularity found in his novels Wind, cloud and monument, Jiri Mountain, Dictionary of happiness language. The popularity in Wind, cloud and monument is focused on the pleasure. In 1970's, the horizon of expectation that the public had on historical novels was something of interest and enlightenment. This novel created heroic characters born with unusual ability, and it was comprised of their stories of adventures such as martial arts, righteous outlaw, and involvement with many women; this projection of topos became the element of the popular pleasure in an aspect of the escapism. Also, this novel increased the amusement of the story by creating unique characters, or utilizing the suspense by taking advantage of the serial novel of news that is segmented by episodes while also using the narrative convention of popular novel. Byeong-ju Lee used the enlightening narrative strategy with the expectation horizon of expressing the cause of the collapse of the Joseon Dynasty to the public. Descriptions about classical poetry, Gayageum, Pansori and Sijochang became a way for the public to enjoy the cultural amusement at least through the imagination. Educative pleasure like historic knowledge, culture, and arts is not only the distinct feature of Byeong-ju Lee’s literature but also the primary factor of its popularity in conjunction with the public’s desire for education in the 1970’s. The popularity in Jiri Mountain is focused on the empathy. Empathy is based on the ideological and intellectual valuation. The historic tragedies appeared in the novel such as Japanese colonialism, wars, collisions of the left and right wings, conflicts, and division of the country are historic trauma that the readers also commonly have. While reading the novel, readers empathize with the characters' emotions and are healed through the literature by adding and integrating each of their epics of self about the historic trauma. This novel consists of the narrative of growth of Park Tae-young and Lee Kyu; the narrative of growth induces readers' empathy by showing how the subjects of growth fought, overcame, and established their will to the subjective life in the opposition between ego and the world. The setting of the novel is the tragic place where the same people waged a war killing each other. But the novel concludes with the value of respecting life, proposing that the only thing that can magically revive all life killed by humans is nature, namely life itself, which is symbolized by the Jiri Mountain. This reflected the expectation horizon of the people who wanted social order and stability, and became the main factor that achieved the work’s popularity. The popularity in Dictionary of happiness language was focused on structure of emotions. The structure of emotions means the public’s feeling towards culture that appeared in a particular period. This novel keeps a critical view of various social problems hidden behind the economic growth caused by industrialization in 1970’s. The main character named Seo Je-pil shows a keen sense of understanding reality but has a passive attitude in response to reality. Seo Je-pil’s ambivalent character reflects the structure of emotions within the public who had to pay dearly no matter which side they choose to belong during the political conflict. In this novel, women who are involved complicatedly with Seo Je-pil are longing for only him without being jealous of each other. Also, the relationships between Seo Je-pil and women are categorized by friends, the husband and wife, Platonic love, and physical pleasure types; each woman in each type has the perfect condition to perform her exact role. In particular, the women related with physical pleasure are all prostitutes and always encounter with him by chance. Seo Je-pil’s view of women in the novel reflects male fantasies like this. The eroticism in this novel can be seen as a reflection towards social taboos that the public encountered in Korea during the 1970’s. Furthermore, this novel mirrors the confusing emotional structure of the public faced with cultural hybridization in the 1970’s. Seo Je-pil considers Western culture to be superior to Korean culture and imitates it for the pride of being a cultured person. On the other hand, to express the identity of Korean culture, the novel criticizes the quality of Western culture itself or the tendency of following Western culture and emphasizes something highly Korean. Seo Je-pil, who wanted to be a novelist, is just a translator playing the role of the cultural hybridization and didn't finish his own novel; this is interpreted as that hybridization in Korean society during the 1970’s had not arrived on the level of subjective possession. The popularity of Byeong-ju Lee’s novels with such various features can be seen as his own way of communicating with his contemporary readers. He is the writer who tried to contain historicity and popularity in his literature. It is difficult to say his attempt was successful because it had a limit of being too educational with an emphasis on the historic meaning and too popular with an emphasis on popularity on the other hand. But the popularity of the literature Byeong-ju Lee attempted in 1970’s has meaning in the history of literature considering the tendency of literature today that the boundary between the high and popular literature is disappearing.
