This study aims to express Korean modern ink painting with the concept of ‘harmony’ which is unique Korean spiritual culture. For this purpose, this study established its standard with the concept of ‘harmony’ to embody Korean spiritual culture. With this in the center, study interprets typical Korean modern ink painting artists and intends to continue Korean sense of beauty through author’s own works. Study found out that Han thought (韓思想), Ki philosophy (氣哲學) and view of nature (自然觀), which constitute the very foundation of Korean spiritual culture, possess the concept of harmony as their common standard. In addition, study judged that more detailed and segmented standards are required than macroscopic concepts such as Han thought (韓思想), Ki philosophy (氣哲學) and view of nature (自然觀). Thus, this study separated Han thought and understood it as entity connected with intermediary concept and considered Ki philosophy as existing foundation for all things and view of nature as nonchalant moderation. Study tried to suggest a theoretical standard for how aesthetic factors and theoretical factors effectively manifest themselves when such philosophies are applied to ink painting. Next, study tried to explore the artworks through theoretical review on how to harmonize the facts realized through author’s own experiences and flow of consciousness. Especially, study tried to verify such philosophical systems through the works of several Korean modern ink painting artists, accept them to author’s own works and secure modern formativeness. In particular, the author tried to draw out calligraphic characteristics in abstract forms while directly experiencing and learn traditional theories of paining and formulate them into author’s own formative language. The geometric spaces of modern ink painting artists are reorganized and acquire sensations as forms while giving rise to physical collision one another, and study discovered by applying the concept of harmony to them that the independent nature of ink colors and margins are expressed as independent Korean fine art. Through exploration of new techniques and expression of inherent consciousness, modern ink paintings completed classical harmonious temperament. Ink paintings’ non-primordial standards of value, which are not dichotomous and harmonize contrasting opposites, are materialized into practical existence not only through the pursuit of spiritual world alone but also through an artist’s experience, consciousness and skills. Therefore, this study explored how the concept of harmony is recognized and expressed in Korean modern paintings and tried to elucidate that unique Korean spiritual culture ‘harmony’ is the very traditional value and identity of ink painting. Further, study analyzed author’s own works and sought out the direction of future works by interpreting harmony as the meaning of coexistence which can embrace diverse phenomena of modern life.
