People feel and experience through the body. Sensual pleasures are also one of experiences obtained through the body. If we live a life in compliance with the decadent flow fostered by social hedonism without any awareness of problem in the contemporary torrential trends, we may lose the time and meaning of our own unique lives. Going beyond simple experiences, each individual needs to fathom out the depth of the experiences. It is because people interpret and accept their experiences through the body subjectively but they can go out to a broader world by sharing (through education, culture, communication, conversation, etc.) such experiences that may be fragmentary. In the past, the body, opposed to the concept of the spirit, was considered an object of caution (especially in Christianity). Even it was condemned as evil in the Middle Age. Today’s church teaches, however, that the human body should be viewed in a rational, scientific, and integrated eye. The position is that man can be real only in the united structure of the spirit and the body. Starting from this Christian viewpoint today, this study was conducted with purposes as follows. First, it was to examine the sacramental characteristics of the body based on religious symbolism (sign, reality, relationship). Second, this study was to search for the holy meanings of the body focusing on the teachings of Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body (1979‐1984). Particularly in the Pope’s teachings surrounding marriage between a man and a woman, this study examined the possibility for expanding the meaning to all living beings, neighbors, and communities. Third, with suggesting a kind of ‘virtue’ that could be presented as the practical category, this study discussed whether the virtue could have an important meaning in connection to the body. The view ‘The human body is sacramental’ extracted from Pope John Paul II’s teachings is considered identical with the saying ‘We humans play a role of sacrament.’ By comparing this viewpoint of the Pope with contemporary philosophical views of symbols and with the church’s view of the sacraments, we may be able to be conscious of God’s presence invisible in ‘communio personarum’ and to expose the presence through the body. What is more, the meaning is expected to open the possibility of change in the paradigm of perception for establishing a life network. Going further, it may be possible to suggest a right direction for changing the perception of the body to be pursued as a practical category by contemporary people. The author writes this with the hope that the entire society may rediscover the dignity of human life, namely, the body given to each individual in a healthy and noble way.
