The purpose of this study was to propose a substance theory which describe the process of vicarious posttraumatic growth(VPTG) in counselors who are consistently confronting clients' trauma. It conducted an in-depth interview of 10 licensed counselors engaged in clinical work in trauma centers and public support organization for trauma survivors. Collected data was analyzed using a ground theory approach(Strauss & Cobin, 1990, 1998, 2008). The study questions were "What is the central phenomenon of VPTG in counselors?", "How the counselors overcome vicarious traumatization(VT) and experience VPTG?", "What are variables related to VPTG?" The results were presented as the following: 163 concepts, 48 sub-categories, and 23 categories were drawn from open coding. The central phenomenon of VPTG was 'disrupting safety·trust schema', 'intrusive thought and safety pursuing action' and 'burn out'. The causal conditions were 'consist exposure to trauma materials' 'empathy and dedication' and the contextual conditions were 'clients' vulnerable surroundings', 'conflicting in support system'. Eight action/interaction strategies they used to deal with VT were 'awakening', 'withdrawing', 'confiding', 'separating', ' learning and teaching', 'recharging', 'belief accommodation' 'acting for recovery conditions' and these strategies were found to be facilitated by mediating conditions such as 'counselors' inner resources', 'witnessing clients' change and growth', 'social support and assistant'. The results followed were 'deep understanding and respecting human beings', 'realizing the work value', 'expertise development and social contribution', 'being spiritually matured', 'being changed the way of life'. On the other hand, the process of VPTG were found to three phases - 'awakening and confiding'. 'separation and recharging', 'accommodation and connecting - through which pain/ satisfaction, loss/reward, and disruption/reconstruction were a cycle. Awakening and confiding phase is when the participants are aware the pain and confusion of VT working with traumatized clients. Separation and recharging phase is when the participants withdrew from trauma cases, built therapeutic boundary, looked for the solutions and recharged burn-out energy. Accommodation and connecting phase is when the participants accommodated the disrupted schema and reconstructed more realistic schema, share the knowledge and consolation with professional group and community resources, and carried out a social responsibility. The core category was 'fulfilling empathy and role expanded through being victim experience'. From empathy and dedication participants went through VT which was like clients' posttraumatic stress symptom. VT transformed into a growth when participants who had inner resources, inspired the change and growth of clients with in the social support and assistance. And the growth for participants was in the process to pursue the personal and professional values putting expanded empathy and social roles into practice. And participants showed differences in implementation of action/reaction strategies in accordance with the agency they involved which bring about different causal·contextual conditions. The participants belong to the public system were many in contact with 'more vulnerable clients', and many 'undergoing conflicts in support system. Therefore, 'confiding' to understand their predicament had gained predominance. The participants involved in a cooperative social network/NGO, were active for restoration the surroundings making social network for the multi support. The participants belong to private counseling centers had strategy 'to teach and learn' frequently. They were most eager to develop their expertise and share it through research, workshops, advisory activities. At conditional/consequential matrix, analyzing VPTG from micro level of client-counselor to macro level of community, it was stressed that the point of view and multi-level intervention in understanding and treatment of trauma should be expanded. The results of this study described the process of counselors' VPTG more specifically and found relative factors of VPTG. And it is expected to offer implications to education, training, supervision, personal care and organizational managing for counselors exposed to the treats of VT. ,韩语论文网站,韩语论文题目 |
