Diego Velazquez (1599 - 1660) was a realistic artist during the golden age for art in Spain. He used both Picaresca that was a kind of the novel in Spain and culture of ordinary people which were the most prevalent ones at that time in Spanish royal art. The research on Spanish cultural history in the 17th century is essential to understand Velazquez's artworks. The study on Velazquez's works was conducted exploring the reason why humor in culture developed in Spain. Velazquez was influenced by bodegóns that literally 'tavern scenes' or paintings of everyday life in which artists used a unique brushstroke and painted the peculiar scene. In his works, the limited perspective emerging in religious paintings which represented Baroque art or in royal paintings was revealed in a different form. The traits of Velazquez's works were religious or fancy like royal art, and instructive, providing distinctive pleasure for art to the ruling class that were tired of extremely suppressing the religion. Facets of custom and humor were connected with classic mythology in art and religious art in Velazquez's works. In addition, depicting an ordinary civilian or a clown made a magnificent and decorative art more authentic, which mainly appeared in Velazquez's late masterpieces. This style was introduced to French art by cultural exchange between France and Spain. The unique feature of Spanish paintings was acknowledged by romantic artists and impressive artists. Impressive artists in the 19th century considered genre painting and still-life as the origin of impressive art. Velazquez associated genre painting and still-life with royal art. His distinctive painting style which showed an individual's desire influenced next generation artists. In other words, his painting style could be characterized as the unparalleled artistic form disclosing the mixture of various cultures, races, and religion as well as the realistic artistic style unlike other arts focused on the beauty of human bodies and the religion. Spanish art developed through existing realistic custom, not the standpoint of the humanities or not the viewpoint from realism, which considerably affected Velazquez. This study is to examine Velazquez's painting style and Spanish realism.
