The population of Korea is aging rapidly along with aging of the baby-boomer generation. The experiences of society, politics and culture that the baby-boomers went through are differentiated from the existing the elderly generations, and they show specified lifestyles. They are called new seniors or active seniors. Based on health, stable economic power and education, they have high income and consumption level, show independent tendency from their children economically, and have high desire for leisure life after retirement. Leisure life in old age has a great influence on satisfaction with life, so the issue about how they should spend the extended time after retirement is raised because most of them focused on work when they were young. It is time to research the basic direction of space design of leisure facilities for the elderly according to their lifestyles because the baby-boomer generation started to enter the aged stage. The satisfaction about senior welfare centers among leisure facilities for the elderly is high, but it is necessary to change the facilities into the ones that are suitable to the lifestyle of the baby-boomers who will be main users in the future. Therefore, in this study, the baby-boomers' life styles were comprehended and classified into groups with different characteristics, and based on this, the space suitable for their lifestyles were suggested through space preference of senior welfare facilities. The research range is the necessity and space and interior space element preferences of senior welfare centers targeting baby-boomers residing in Seoul who were born in between 1955 and 1963. Regarding research method, the concept and characteristics of research subjects were established through precedent studies, lifestyle measurement items and a senior welfare center space preference research tool were developed, and then the following conclusion was drawn. First, the life styles of baby-boomers living in Seoul were divided into 5 groups, and the lifestyle characteristics and demographic characteristics of each group were organized. The groups showed significant differences depending on gender, income, job and residence. Second, the following is the application plan according to senior welfare center space preference of each group. 1) Group A has those who are actively involved in social, economic and consumption activities, and they have high preference about lifelong education support space. This group showed difference from other groups in that they prefer functional convenience and safety in interior space elements, so these elements should be applied preferentially. 2) Group B has high ratio of male office workers with high conservative values. It seems that they need improvement of professionalism in facilities, programs and instructors. In senior welfare center space, rather than adoption of new space, the existing space should be functioned properly. 3) Group C is composed of those with high income and high education levels who are interested in education and health. The need for senior welfare centers is high, but they do not show distinct characteristics in the preference of space. For the group, specialized institutions and complex facilities can be considered even if high cost is required. 4) Group D has the smallest number of subjects, who have interest in hobbies but show the tendency of independence. They show less need of senior welfare centers compared to other groups. For this group, it is necessary to improve their recognition about senior welfare centers. 5) Group E has many women and housewives, and they have interest in trends and communicating with other generations. For this group, it is necessary to make leisure support space for artistic activities and social participation support space available with low cost. Third, the priority of senior welfare center interior space elements was pleasant environment followed by functional convenience, safety, social interchange and design. Except for some parts, the order of priority was similar, so pleasant environment should be considered preferentially in space plan. The meanings and limitation of this study are as follows. This study is space preference research according to life styles of the baby-boomer generation who will be the main users of senior welfare centers in the future, and has a significance as basic research of the senior welfare center space plan. However, the subjects were limited within those living in Seoul, so it is hard to generalize life styles of the whole baby-boomers, and the preference of those who can't use internet is not reflected because this study was done through internet survey. In addition, there are not many baby-boomers who use senior welfare centers yet, so the space preference can be changed according to future research results.
