China, consisting of many ethnic groups, has maintained unique characteristics and traditions of each minority group in cultures of clothing, making them important sources of idea in fashion design.As interest and importance on clothes of minor ethnic groups became issues, research on various minority groups were conducted; however, research on Zhuangzu (壯族) or the Zhuang people of China has been insufficient. Thus, this study has as an objective to analyze the characteristics and expressions of clothes worn by the Zhuang; based on them, to develop and produce new fashion designs, and to propose creative and various directions in fashion design. As for the research method, the survey was made on cultural background, characteristics of costume, relevant technique and so forth of the Zhuang costume on the basis of bibliographic data and photographic data with respect to the culture and costume of minority races in China and costume of Zhuang. On the basis of such a survey analysis, 4 sets of women’s fashion design that facilitated the expression technique of the Zhuang costume and the motive of Zhuang costume were made. With the characteristics of the traditional costume, the denim fabric and knit that may be worn in contemporary life are utilized for designing and various decorative techniques are applied. The conclusion of the research through the work production is shown as follows. First, the Zhuang costume is sophisticated and aesthetic and it expresses the mental world of the Zhuang in cultural sense. The type of costume is mainly in the straight line. It wears the short upper-wear with the skirt or pants or wears shirts of the knee length. The color-tones of the costume are black, blue and white. Materials are used with cotton and helm fabrics that are mostly produced manually. The patterns are largely divided into three-fold; the geometric pattern, animal pattern and plant pattern. The ornaments of the Zhuang have many kinds with hats, head ornaments, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, shoes and belts. In addition, the Zhuang costume has been changing continuously with the characteristics of fashion in accordance with the life phases. The Zhuang costume is the product of life and living of Zhuang that its costume expresses well of diligence, life attitude in effort and simple mind of Zhuang and it is diverse and beautiful. It also facilitates well of sophisticated costume expression technique and is a very important part of the costume for minority race in China. Second, the expression technique for the Zhuang costume is generally divided into textile printing, spinning and weaving, and embroidery. By facilitating the three techniques, it expresses well of graceful and splendid appearance of the Zhuang costume. In particular, the silk of Zhuang is representative for the minority races and is the highest phase of the silk weaving in China. Those women of Zhuang absorbed the pinnacle of silk weaving skill of Han people and converged with its own silk weaving technique to come up with the length that is equipped with the life style and cultural characteristics of the race. The thread mixed fiber is the greatest point of the length and it not only contains the warmth and thickness of cotton but also equipped with the splendor of the thread. This research deploys 4 sets of design for women’s wear by reflecting the foregoing characteristics and expression technique for its production. Happy Land Theme Work 1 and 2 are intended to express the joyful and happy mind of Zhuang people on the basis of ceremonial Zhuang costume during the holidays. ‘Peace of Mind’ Theme Work 3 and 4 are intended to display the simple and diligent Zhuang people on the basis of costume frequently worn by the Zhuang people. The result of the work production is shown as follows. With the inspiration of the traditional Zhuang costume, the black and blue were the colors mainly used for the Zhuang people and the material was mostly denim. Denim is the material that blends in well for the contemporary facilitation of the Zhuang costume and it is facilitated for knitting technique, fur and hemp fabric as patchwork, knitting and embroidery works. It is appropriate to express the joyful and happy mind of Zhuang people to celebrate holidays with extraordinary colors, exaggerated silhouettes and diverse decorations. In addition, the blue and white were expressing the simple mind of Zhuang people. By using the natural images, such as, sun, mountain, river, water, fish and others, it expresses the peaceful natural views and deploys the mindset for nature worship of Zhuang in contemporary design to express the simple life and peaceful mind. Through the analysis on unique Zhuang culture, this research is to find out the characteristics of the Zhuang costume and develops the new fashion design by adding the denim material that is established as an important position of the contemporary fashion without deviating from the traditional costume, and with the foregoing as the basis, it displays the possibility for diverse design development through the new insight on contemporary fashion design. Also, it displays the costume of Zhuang, a minority race in China, a minority race of China and the Chinese style in Chinoiserie as well as affirming the fact that numerous ideas in the traditional Chinese costume would be a great case study in contemporary fashion.
