The goals of this study are to examine the aesthetic features of costumes that appear in Pushkin’s『Eugene Onegin (Евгений Онегин)』and to explore the aesthetic senses of the Russian people. This study has a great significance as studies on Russian costumes, particularly on costumes in Pushkin’s works, can hardly be found in Korea. Moreover, this study is highly valuable in that it proposed a research method of exploring aesthetic consciousness reflected in costumes through a unique genre of literature called a verse novel. In the present study, analysis was performed mainly by reviewing domestic and international literature on Pushkin’s life and the world of his works, as well as the Russia’s historical background and the history of Russian costumes. The aesthetic features of costumes worn by each character in『Eugene Onegin』were speculated in terms of the shape and style of the costumes, based on the illustrations and movies depictions after extracting key words describing the attires of each character in the novel. The result of analyzing the costumes in『Eugene Onegin』by character is as follows. First, Onegin’s costumes were characterized as British dandy look, exotic formal wear, Hungarian masquerade costumes, traditional Russian costumes, and French knight costumes. Second, Lensky’s costumes were characterized as German romantic look and traditional Russian costumes. Third, Tatyana's costumes were characterized as Onegin look, traditional Russian costumes, and Russian romantic look. Fourth, Olga's costumes were identified as French empire look and French romantic look. Fifth, costumes worn by other characters were identified as follows: Monsieur L’abbe had French dandy look; Tatyana's parents had Russian Rococo look and traditional Russian costumes; and her nanny, horseman, and servants had Russian folk costumes. Based on the aesthetic features of the costumes appearing in『Eugene Onegin』, the aesthetic senses of the Russian people can be summarized as follows. First, they sought international universality. International universality refers to the popular trends and standards that deemed beautiful internationally during the contemporary age. International universality was mainly observed in Onegin’s costumes that were elaborately decorated in European style which is recently being popular. It was found that he accepted the fashion style that was believed to be most trendy during the time. Second, they yearned for exotic styles. Exotic styles refer to the fashion styles of other neighboring countries such as America, Germany, and Hungary as opposed to the styles of France and United Kingdom, which were the center of Europe. Onegin and Lensky were the characters who preferred exotic styles; they demonstrated the international styles by wearing exotic accessories. Third, they expressed snobbism. Snobbism refers to nonchalant behavior that boasts appearance and reveals intellectual vanity. Onegin is the character who manifested the most snobbish tendency; he was depicted as a Russian dandy who put up a fancy façade with empty mind and adorned his appearance with the finest brands and the highest quality materials. Fourth, they demonstrated the self-realization of their ethnic identity. Ethnic identity refers to the effort to preserve and maintain their traditional culture and costumes. Ethnic identity was manifested the most in Tatyana; she wore Russian dresses by reinterpreting the universal European trend and decorative Russian elements. Fifth, they praised a natural beauty. Praise of a natural beauty refers to the longing for quiet life dwelling with farmers in rural areas. Tatyana is the character who expressed the praise for nature the most. She was an authentic Russian virgin filled with Russian spirit; she wore Russian folk costumes and admired a beauty of the nature. She herself was a representation of the nature. As mentioned above, the aesthetic values of costumes in Pushkin’s『Eugene Onegin』can be explained with universality that embraces all things. Pushkin embraced the characteristics of Western Europe and attempted to perfectly recreate a Russian style. By integrating Western elements, Eastern elements, and Slavic elements, he strived to express what is the most Russian-like, filled with the spirit of Russia. Pushkin is the father of Russian literature. Every corner of Russia presents the footprint of Pushkin, and the Russian people’s respect and admiration for Pushkin are exceptional. Furthermore,『Eugene Onegin』, which is Pushkin’s representational work that displays his literary capacity, describes extensively the political, social, cultural, and artistic aspect of the early 19th century Russia. Accordingly, the study on aesthetic consciousness manifested in Pushkin’s work is believed to present the opportunity that illuminates the Russian costume designs. Furthermore, it is expected that this study will be used as baseline data to aid the understanding of the political, social, cultural, and artistic fields in Russia.
