The recent changes of Taekwondo demonstrations were investigated in this study. The recent changes of Taekwondo demonstrations were investigated in this study. For the purpose of the study, the study subjects were selected as follows: First, how is Taekwondo demonstration as a system? Second, what are the changes of social systems and of the Taekwondo demonstration system? A qualitative methodology was applied and the translated versions of the system theory books, academic materials, and symposium materials by Niklas Luhmann as well as related news articles, Taekwondo magazine articles, and the website contents of Taekwondo-related organizations were collected for the study. The collected materials were analyzed using Luhmann’s system theory, a theoretical analysis framework, and the following conclusions were reached. First, the Taekwondo demonstration system consists of internal and external aspects as a communication system. The internal aspect is the system itself and the external aspect is the environment, and the Taekwondo demonstration system reduces the complexity of the external environment. Economics, politics, and arts can also be included in the environment for the communication purpose of the system. The Taekwondo demonstration system incessantly produces demonstrations and performances as an autopoietic system. It is believed that the system absorbs the resources required for its survival such as substances and energy from the environment so that it cannot be eliminated as an uninteresting or boring demonstration or performance. The media of the Taekwondo demonstration system depend on the various levels of communication and the lingual media of the interaction level can be used. As proliferation media, the videos or promotional brochures of Taekwondo demonstrations play a role in communicating the demonstration system. The codes of the Taekwondo demonstration system are believed to be partly changing. The system of the past focused on showing the exemplary aspect of Taekwondo in terms of technique and spirit. Today’s Taekwondo demonstrations are changing to something entertaining, interesting, or pleasant as an excellent Korean culture in part by the government policies trying to promote the cultural and artistic aspects of Taekwondo. Therefore, today’s Taekwondo demonstration system can form the codes of entertaining/unentertaining and interesting/uninteresting, among others. The programs of the Taekwondo demonstration system consist of Taekwondo technical systems and various elements. If a Taekwondo demonstration is intended to show exemplary Taekwondo, then the program may focus on the technical systems of Taekwondo. Today’s Taekwondo demonstration programs include the technical systems and other performing artistic elements, such as acting, dancing, and singing, to make the demonstrations an entertaining and interesting experience. It was confirmed that the Taekwondo demonstration system is linked to the functional systems of the society, such as economic, political, and art systems, in the functionally differentiated modern society. In today’s changing Taekwondo demonstrations and performances, the Taekwondo demonstration system and the economic system remain as each other’s environment while they themselves remain as a unique system. The structural linking medium between the Taekwondo demonstration system and the economic system can be watching cost. While the communication of the Taekwondo demonstration system can be checked through media, generally successful media for the system could not be found. One of the reasons may be because the system could not secure its identity. The system also looks somewhat incomplete compared to functionally differentiated social systems. Therefore, the communication of social systems was observed to explain how the Taekwondo demonstration system operates and changes. The performance aspect of the Taekwondo demonstration system showed that social systems were interested in the communication of the system. Such communication occurs during the creation and organization of Taekwondo demonstrations, Taekwondo education, Taekwondo demonstrations, and performance watching. Second, the observation of the communication of social systems, such as economics, politics, and arts, with regard to Taekwondo demonstrations showed that various kinds of communication occurred in Taekwondo demonstrations. The economic system performed various kinds of communication with regard to Taekwondo demonstrations. Economic events occurred due to the Taekwondo demonstration system. The events included the increase in Taekwondo demonstration budget, creation of jobs related to Taekwondo demonstration, the commercialization of Taekwondo demonstration performances, and the sponsorship of companies for Taekwondo demonstrations. These were the results of the economic system communication. The political system performed various kinds of communication as well. As a result, diplomacy and cultural activities with Taekwondo demonstrations and multiple functions of Taekwondo demonstrations were created. These political events led to the changes of the Taekwondo demonstration system. The art system also performed various kinds of communication. The events, such as performances of Taekwondo demonstrations and the introduction of performing artistic elements to Taekwondo demonstrations, occurred. These artistic events continuously caused the similar kinds of communication with regard to Taekwondo demonstrations, leading to the artistic changes of Taekwondo demonstrations.
