The Renaissance Humanism and Biographical Literature in the 15th and 16th centuries: Focusing on the Florence in Italy The study is focused on examining people in the era of the Renaissance in order to figure out the process of departing from religious influence to be secularized based on literature in the first part of the era of the Renaissance. Furthermore, the author delved into how those in the era of the Renaissance discovered themselves. Early humanists viewed humanism as a severance from the Middle Age from the beginning. They also studied classics from ancient Greece and Rome to understand the intellectual fundamentals of the time. Humanists made efforts to revive the ancient times, and it paved the way for giving birth to the humanities. The early humanities were mostly studied by classical scholars before being gradually adored by the general public. The humanities of the time aimed at nurturing citizens equipped with integrity. As ordinary citizens began to develop interest in the humanities, they were able to distinguish ‘themselves’ from ‘others’ to discover a sense of self. People in the era of the Renaissance made following efforts to discover themselves. First of all, they endeavored to turn themselves into a universalist in order to win fame in the society. In an effort to emerge as a universalist, they pushed for experimentalism by emphasizing a positive attitude instead of a sedentary attitude. This experimentalism laid the foundation for people in the era of the Renaissance to form an independent self∼identity. Second, citizens tried to express their individualism within a group while attempting to distinguish individuals through differentiation amid relationships with others. This trend paved the way for humanities education and biological literature to be advanced. Autobiographies are believed to be the result of individual efforts made by people in the era of the Renaissance. Humanists of the time published biographies where authors reflected their mindset in lives of great men in ancient times for the purpose of recreation based on new interpretation. Scholars wrote biographies of famous people of the same age in addition to the ancients. Biographies of people of the same age aimed to enhance self∼esteem on the part of citizens. As biographical literature of the time gained popularity, a desire for fame led to facilitated creation of biographies. In particular, authorship of biographies does not require particular qualifications, so a growing number of ordinary citizens wrote about their life and published autobiographies. Biographical literature of the time was a process of recognizing and criticizing one’s own life or others’ lives with an aim to discover self∼identity and understand human beings in general. In addition, authorship of autobiographies was none other than discovery of self∼consciousness of individuals, that is to say discovery of a main agent. People in the era of the Renaissance had self∼consciousness for some reasons. First of all, they were able to look at themselves or others, the subjects to authorship, objectively. Second, they were able to distinguish the inner world of individuals from the external world as a subject to authorship. Third, as an increased number of people were able to enjoy a life of leisure on the back of economic affluence, the number of educated citizens was increased. Citizens who received humanities education were not hesitant about sharing their ideas. Humanism was further facilitated based on exchange of opinions through discussions among people of the time. However, citizens had no choice but to experience religious restrictions in order to lead a life as an independent individual. As a growing number of citizens departed from religious influence, cities emerged as a new space where citizens were allowed to enjoy freedom. It enabled a civil society that was placed under the influence of a strict religion to pursue secularization. The study found out that secularization had something in common with discovery of self∼identity. At a time when Western Europe went through social transition through discovery of self∼identity and secularization, Renaissance played a part as a bridge linking the Middle Age to modern times.
