A Study on Spanglish Vocabulary : Focusing on the Form and the Generation of Meanings “Spanglish” refers to various ways of a language in which English and Spanish are combined to form mixtures of structure, meaning and form. The increase of the Hispanic population in the U.S. has greatly influenced the usage of languages. The phenomenon of Spanglish is caused by the Hispanic and Latino population, which are not good at English and so mix English and Spanish. Over time Spanglish has secured its position as a social dialect as it is currently featured in American literature, novels, advertisement, lyrics of songs and movies and has widely spread out with the young generation at the central influence. Its importance has also become more significant. For these reasons, those who use or study Spanish came to focus the need that in order to properly understand Spanish, they needed to learn Spanglish for accurate translation and interpretation. Thus, this study analyzes Spanglish vocabulary mainly in terms of form and type for the purpose that Spanish learners can distinguish Spanglish from Spanish. First, this study examines the vocabulary of Chicano, Nuyorican and Cubonic used by Mexicans, Puerto Ricans and Cubans who take up the largest ratio among the Hispanic/Latino population in the U.S. Just as Spanish used in 18 countries in Latin America except for Brazil is slightly different, Spanglish too varies depending on the population but shares similar phonemic variations and forms. In Spanglish, dominant features include Spanglish expressions used for the sake of convenience in pronunciation. Second, this study examines the formation of Spanglish through “copying” and “borrowing.” “Copying” refers to using the vocabulary already existing in Spanish, which influenced the new word phonologically or semantically. This study focuses on the following cases: the Spanglish word that is similar to Spanish in its form but different in meaning; the Spanglish word that is different from Spanish but the meaning is the same as Spanish; and the Spanglish word that is similar with Spanish in its form and meaning. “Borrowing” refers to generating new vocabulary by changing English words to fit into Spanish phonemes or phonological formats. In other words, it refers to “borrowing” certain features of another language, such as characters, word endings and/or morphemes. In borrowing, there are cases where English words are used as they are, and cases where English words are borrowed to form Spanglish words, fitting the Spanish phonological structure. This study examines the rules of borrowing in Spanglish by studying how the phonological structure changes in borrowing, as it focuses on changes of vowels and consonants in examples. Because in Spanglish, rules of grammar or vocabulary do not exist, the form and the meaning of Spanglish used in different regions are different but the language shares similar phonological rules. For this reason, there have been talks that Spanglish today needs to be recognized as one full language form. Considering the increase of the usage and importance of Spanglish in the U.S., this study concludes that continuing interest and education in Spanglish are necessary.
