The cultural exchanges between South Korea and China have becomes more frequent these days and Chinese people pay attention to not only TV shows and K-POP, but also the Korean news. The Chosun Ilbo is a highly influential news in South Korea. Besides delivering news in Korean, the website also provides news in English, Chinese and Japanese. This thesis is focused on the Chinese website of the Chosun Ilbo and selects some news items from it for research and comparison from July, 2013 to May, 2014.
The first chapter is related to the selectivity of the research object, its purpose, and the necessity of the research as well as the methods and content of this research. It also describes the theory and characteristics of the news translation.
The second chapter analyzes the problems in translation from the Chinese website of the Chosun Ilbo in vocabulary and classifies them into seven areas: loan words, technical terms, homographs, language background, collocation of phrases, passive words, numbers and time. First, load words, especially English loan words, have appeared more frequently in Korean in recent decades. The Chinese edition of the Chosun Ilbo does not translate the loan words into Chinese; Instead, it translates them back into English and puts the English words in the translated text. Currently, Chinese people usually translate these loan words into Chinese, which can prevent the usage of loan words. If there were lots of English words in the text, most Chinese readers would not be used to them, which would lead to bad readability. For example, there are some proper names in Korean news s and another English name or English abbreviation is always added behind these proper names. In translation, it is unnecessary to put the English name or English abbreviation behind the translated names. Secondly, the technical terms used in news articles should be translated accurately. If the translator is not sure about the word, it is best to consult a dictionary or search online for its correct meaning and usage. Most of the technical terms used were made by Sino-Korean words, so sometimes technical words are not translated accurately because the translator is affected by these Sino-Korean words. Third, there are some Sino-Korean words in Korean and some of them have different meanings from the Chinese words, which leads to problems in translation. The Sino-Korean words can lead to erroneous meanings, so translators need pay more attention to them. Fourth, a translation without language background is caused by the rigid translation of words from a dictionary without considering changes in society or the nature of vocabulary or usage of the words in accordance with everyday Chinese expressions and usage. Fifth, the differences between Korean and Chinese cause difficulty when matching vocabulary which leads to a problem in news translation. One to one word translation causes incorrect matches of vocabulary, leading to poor readability. Therefore, the translation should match the characteristics of Chinese. Sixth, the problem of passive voice translation exists because the passive voice is translated into the active voice and the language sense is lost during this process. Seventh, in terms of time and number translation analysis, it is believed that problems are caused by the inaccuracy of numbers and time. The key to solving this problem is that the translator should pay more attention to the expression customs, especially the position of a time or numbers in a Chinese news .
The third chapter analyzes the problems in translation from the Chinese website of the Chosun Ilbo in sentences and classifies them into seven parts: associated words, word order, subject, sentence meaning, the completeness of a sentence, tense and punctuation. First, associated words are necessary to express a logical relationship. It is necessary to use these associated words in the translation of a news . The associated words translation problem is mainly caused by using only the previous part of a sentence or the last part of a sentence, or use of an associated word which is not suitable for the logic of the sentences. It is better to use Chinese associated words without the affect caused by Korean connective endings. Second, the translation affected by Korean word order is one common problem in Korean-Chinese news translation. Modifiers used in Korean are usually long, and if the sentence is translated following Korean word order, it will not accord with the accurate Chinese expression manner. Such a translation is formed if the sentence is translated following Korean word order and has a bad influence on the readability of the text. Hence, translators should add proper modifiers to sentences without changing their meanings. Third, the problem of the subject of sentences mainly arises because the subject is always omitted in Korean in repeated expressions. However, in the translation the omitted subject should be translated so that the reader will not be confused. The fourth problem is the mistranslation caused by the misunderstanding of the meaning of sentences, which is mainly caused by the carelessness of translators. This problem can be solved by carefully checking for accuracy from time to time during the translation. Fifth, problems in sentence completeness arise due to the one word to one word translation practice which disregards spoken Chinese expressions. This makes the sentences lack fluency and seem scattered for the reader. This problem should be solved by adding proper words without changing the meaning of the sentences. Sixth, the problem of tense translation exists because Chinese tense auxiliary words are not added, which leads to confusion as to whether this event happened before or will happen later. Seventh, the misuse of punctuation occurs sometimes. This is due to one to one translation of Korean punctuation or misuse of Chinese punctuation. Hence, translators should pay more attention to the use of punctuation in Chinese news articles and use the proper punctuation based on the structure and association between sentences following the Chinese example, without being affected by Korean conventions in translation.
Though the Chinese translation on the website of the Chosun Ilbo is very good, sometimes some words are hard to understand and some sentences are not clear and coherent compared with regular Chinese news. It is necessary that the Chosun Ilbo should provide a better translation to attract more readers in order to create a bridge of cultural communication between Korean and Chinese. The translators should pay more attention to problems in the translation of sentences and vocabulary and be proficient in using common Chinese expressions. The researcher hopes this thesis can help translators to improve the quality of translations and provide a communication platform for pre-translators.
