Abstract
The emergence and use of foreign words in a language is a common language phenomenon. It is prevalent to find the use of loanwords in all the languages in the world. It is prevalent to find the use of loanwords in all the languages in the world. The vocabulary is the fastest thing that changes in the language system, and also the best reflection of the signs of the linguistic situation of an era. Loanwords are a special class of members in the vocabulary system. They have great research value reflecting the background of the times, and show the linguistic characteristics of a specific period of time.
The "Modern Chinese New Words Etymology Dictionary", compiled by the Chinese Language Society of Hong Kong, uses statistical data , especially the detailed statistics of paraphrase words, to find the characteristics of that era’s foreign words. In other words, on the basis of statistical data, this will take the total research and last research phase and combine it with the synchronic angle of observation, scanning from a diachronic perspective , in order to find the development trajectory of Chinese loanwords and the development of the Chinese vocabulary.
This is an overview of the first part of the article. This section briefly discusses the historical background of the foreign words in China since the Qing Dynasty to the mid - twentieth century. It will also introduce the research of what Chinese scholars of this period have done over loanwords, and explain the aims of this thesis and thesis research methods being used .
The second part of the article describes the literature that this research has relied on - the aforementioned "Modern Chinese New Words Etymology Dictionary" by the co-coordinating editor of the Chinese Language Society of Hong Kong in 2001. This section details the range of received words, writing features in this dictionary and how it provides a great amount of help in the research.
The third part of foreign words included in the "Modern Chinese New Words Etymology Dictionary” is divided into different categories such as the transliteration of the word, paraphrase words, half transliteration half paraphrase words, sound and meaning of the translation of foreign words, and transliteration filling loanwords by the type of shape words .
The fourth part will look at paraphrase loanwords separately in a detailed analysis. In order to do this paraphrase vocabulary was selected from
“Modern Chinese New Words Etymology Dictionary "(see Appendix) to understand the ratio of paraphrase words, the characteristics of the paraphrase words, and to analyze the characteristics of this time period reflected by the loanwords.
The last part of the article analyzes the pattern of the development of Chinese foreign words, and points out that the foreign words can only be accepted and have vitality when they are widely used by people.
In order to have a comprehensive, scientific analysis and complete understanding of the material, the research material has to be rich and based on true literature. It must also be combined with qualitative and quantitative research. This shows a comprehensive analysis of the 19th century to the mid-twentieth century Chinese loanwords, the details of this particular historical period of Chinese New vocabulary century, and fully demonstrates the characteristics of the Chinese loanwords in this period of time. Last but not least, this contributes to the further research of Chinese Loanwords.
