<Speech & Composition> was designated as an optional subject in 2007 Revised Korean Curriculum. It is in the same context with the ‘Media Language’, one of the contents emphasized in the 2007 Revised Korean Curriculum.

<Speech & Composition> is a subject that aims to enhance the communication ability, problem-solving ability, thinking ability, interpersonal ability, etc., and induce the linguistic behavior consistent with common practice of linguistic community based on the understanding of the characteristics of speech and composition, which are part of the behavior for social communication, going beyond personal communication behavior.

<Speech & Composition> can be understood based on the relationship between the spoken language and written language. Although the spoken language(phonetic language) and written language(subtitle language) are used most commonly in our lives, they have different characteristics and can cause confusion in learners.

In this study, the primary focus was placed on searching for, investigating into and ing on such cases of confusion with respect to the media language that are the most commonly used in routine lives for the purpose of ensuring that the messages are conveyed accurately by using the well-organized form. This study intended to look into such issues through the television that is the most commonly used among various media.

Recently, subtitles in Korean language appear on broadcasting programs when the speaker utters words and sometimes describe their motion, facial expression, psychological state, talking style, and the situation. Furthermore, the subtitles even reveal the intention of the producer. Subtitles are not merely conveying the meaning any more, but have become the moving visual symbols. Resultantly, there is a growing reliance on subtitles in broadcasting programs. Thus, it has become necessary to consider the language in various media environment more profoundly.

This study focused on the television media among a variety of media environments and looked into the interview subtitles of news programs.

The discrepancy between the spoken language(phonetic language) and written language(subtitle language) also appeared in the interview subtitles of news programs. In relation to that, the functions of spoken language and subtitle language were analyzed, and thereafter, the difference in patterns was compared. Furthermore, this study intended to establish the standard for the systematic use of subtitles based on the discrepancy between the spoken language and subtitle language(Korean subtitles).

This study was confined to the news subtitles due to the difficulty in setting the standard for all media and broadcasting programs that use the subtitles. The discrepancy was analyzed by collecting the data related to the discrepancy between the spoken language and subtitle language in interviews conducted after November, 2011.

The spoken language and subtitle language can be divided into several types: addition(subject, object, predicate, other grammatical components), alteration(syntactic alternation, lexical alternation), omission(hesitation filter, expletives, grammar morphemes, circumlocution), and others. Such categorization is based on the difference between the spoken language and the written language

This study is intended to broaden the understanding of learners with respect to the meaning of the spoken language and subtitle language through the interview subtitles of news program and to realize the process of reproduction.
