Considering adolescent language an evolving method of expression, this examines its uses in and its relation to Korean social contexts. The purpose of the is to under stand the unique language use of korean youth by deciphering their codes in everyday life and how they are communicated. Through student interviews, this study paid close attention to the three aspects which were the use of written symbols, imitations and vulgarities. To fulfill the purpose of this , three points are demonstrated. First, the characteristics of adolescent language can be categorized through its different usages; Second, there distinct usages derived from the observed results; Third, by understanding adolescent peer culture, the study of adolescent language can offer valuable knowledge and applications by linking their way of creating culture to the established Korean languaculture. In Chapter 3, types of adolescent language use is explained via code alternation, code switching and style shifting. Code alternation shows how adolescents classify the domain of language use. Code-switching shows how adolescents choose language based on their peer group. Style-shifting shows how adolescents tend to choose language to express their individual emotions. Through the language usage of adolescent cliques, Chapter 4 explains how adolescents use their language when communicating with their peers and other significant relations. It also discusses how youth culture can develop through this communication. Written symbols can be divided into abbreviations of initial consonants, onomatopoeias, mimetic words, and emoticons. Adolescents have a tendency to show language use by imitating those in their social environment, role models, and buzzwords from the internet and media. In addition, they have a propensity to use vulgar expressions, which clearly show the power relationships among them. This study presents the adolescent community of practice and examines language use of adolescent the ethnography of communication. Contemporary Korean youth are constructing their own unique culture and way of communication, which corresponds to their social status. Therefore, understanding this can be done only through their own points of view and though adult judgements.
