The present study examines the phonetic realizations of English unstressed vowels produced by Korean advanced learners of English(KLs) compared with Native speakers of English(NSs), focusing on the comparative study of English words and English loanwords. In English, unstressed vowels such as schwa /ə/ have phonetic features that are distinct from stressed ones. The unstressed vowel /ə/ as a mid central vowel is reduced in terms of vowel quality and is predicted to be shorter in length and lower in pitch and intensity than the stressed ones. The aim of this thesis has been four-fold. The first is to see whether the English unstressed vowel /ə/ produced by the KLs is different from that by the NSs in vowel quality, duration, and pitch. The second is to see whether there are some phonetic differences of /ə/ between the English words used as loanwords in Korean and those which are not. The third is to see whether loanword orthography affects the phonetic realization of the unstressed vowels. The fourth is to see whether there is correlation between the realization of the vowel quality and the prosodic features such as duration and pitch in the unstressed vowel spoken by the KLs. To figure out these, words used in the experiment are classified into three categories: 1) English loanwords in Korean whose unstressed vowel is written according to its spelling (e.g. pajama- 파자마); 2) English loanwords of which the unstressed vowel is transcribed as '어' in Korean (e.g. parade- 퍼레이드); and 3) English words which are not used as loanwords in Korean. The result shows that the KLs are usually not native-like in producing the English unstressed vowel /ə/ and loanword orthography affects the way the KLs produce /ə/. The vowel quality of the unstressed vowels produced by the KLs is different from NSs'. The KLs show less of duration difference between the stressed and unstressed vowels than the NSs. The KLs usually have a high pitch in the stressed syllable and the last syllable while the NSs usually produce the peak of F0 in the stressed one. When the KLs have a similar vowel quality(first and second formant frequencies) with NSs’, they produce the shorter duration of the unstressed vowels. However, there is no correlation between the realization of the pitch and the vowel quality in a KLs speech. For better and more natural communication, segmental and suprasegmental features of the unstressed vowel should be taught to the KLs continuously, and it is required to make proper and accurate loanword orthography in Korean.
