The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze Lee Guk-ro's independence movement during the Japanese imperialistic occupation period. And this study is focused on his Hangeul movement. At first, I grasp the Lee's conception of the independence movement. And I confirm that Lee has succeed to Park un-sik(朴殷植, 1859-1925) and Shin chae-ho(申采浩, 1880-1936) in the Understanding of Kochosun(古朝鮮). Lee have entered the faith of Taejonggyo(大倧敎) and met Yun sae-bok(尹世復), Park and Shin. He recognized the existence of Kochosun from the historians. So he wrote his work, the Korea's independence movement and Japanese aggressive politics(1924). He described the real existence of Kochosun, and emphasized the faith of Taejonggyo. In 1924 and 1927, he described a modern history of Korea from a nationalistic point of view in German language. The results were Unabhängigkeitsbewegung Koreas und japanische Eroberungspolitik(Independence movement) and Korea und sein Unabhängigkeitskampf gegen den japanischen Imperialismus(Independence combat). He wrote this book under the influence of Park un-sik's A bloody history of the independence movement of Korea({韓國獨立運動之血史}). But there are many original point of view. In this book he described the brutal aggression of Japanese imperialism and korean people's desperate resistance in simple and clear expression. Lee has succeed to a claim of the absolute independence that has advocated by the uncompromising nationalists, Park un-sik and Shin chae-ho. So he insisted that a independence combat is the only means to liberate korean people. In those books, he deliberately described from Kochosun to ‘the world conference of the oppressed people under imperialism’(世界被壓迫民族大會). He emphasized that Korea has a 4,000-years-old history and a cofigurative culture and a self-existent government. The Japanese Imperialism ruined that Korea's everything. In addition he made known the Korea Tripitaka(八萬大藏經), the metal movable type, Hangeul(the most scientific writing system in the world), a rainfall gauge, an astronomical observatory, a turtle ship, to the Western intellectual. Under the Japan's colonial policy, Korea has undergone total catastrophe. Korea's plunderous situation was presented statistically. In particular he emphasis the Korean people's everlasting independence combat in the colonial period. In so doing he appealed to European the Korea's independence. He alluded to the existence of the book, A modern history of Korea(朝鮮近世史). I concluded that the book is correspond to Lee's two works, namely Independence movement(1924) and Independence combat(1927). Those books have a historical significance in that in 1920's Lee has expounded the historical achievements of Park un-sik and Shin chae-ho. Next, I analyzed the role of Lee in the Hangeul movement in 1930's. Japanese imperialistic language policy is to eradicate the Korean native language and to spread Japanese. By doing so the imperialists tried to assimilate Korean to Japanese. They tried to root out the consciousness of Korean national identity. In 1929, after returning Korea via Europe, Lee promoted the Hangeul movement all over the country. He organized the Korean Language Society(朝鮮語學會) and a committee of the compilation of Hangeul dictionary(朝鮮語辭典編纂會). Though those organizations, he studied, permeated, developed Hangeul on a nationwide scale. This Hangeul Movement provoked by Lee has significance in national history. He and his comrades resisted Japan's language assimilation policy. In this process the leading figures in the Korean Language Society has established the Spelling System of Hangeul, and compiled Hangeul dictionary, and settled the standard language and the orthography of a word of foreign origin. Those fundamental principles formed the basis of the language policy of independent nation-state. Lee specially celebrated Hangeul Proclamation Day all over the country. He and his colleague opened Hangeul workshop on a large scale. Uncompromising nationalist Lee played an leading role in the Hangeul Movement of the Korean Language Society in 1930·40's national combat. The historical feature of Hangeul Movement in 1930's was anti-feudalistic and anti-imperialistic. In other words this movement was the modernization movement of language and the independence movement of nation. In the Liberation period of Korea, he tried to exclude the outside forces from the establishment of an independent nation. This study will be suggestive a study of the independence movement of nation and the Hangeul movement in South Korea and North Korea at the present time. Key words: Taejonggyo(大倧敎), Hangul movement, the Korea Language Society(朝鮮語學會), the nationalistic historian, uncompromising nationalist, an independence movement, Japan's assimilation policy, the compilation of a dictionary, the Spelling System of Hangeul.
