China has brought about many changes since the reformation and open policy in 1978: from socialist system to the introduction of market economy system, joining WTO, and now 2008 Olympic Games, close at hand. China is moving forward to join the line of the world greatest powers at terrific speed, currently. As the reformation and open policy was spreaded in every social sphere rapidly, China has been through a lot of changes. As the society changes, Chinese language has generated words, conflicting and combining with languages and cultures of other nations and other regions. Since such coined words represent each social phenomenon in China, they are the vocabulary that must be learned by the learners of Chinese language. Not simply acquiring vocabulary, as coined words, but they will be able to learn knowledges about Chinese society and culture through the coined words and experience indirectly China, a giant country.
This thesis has examined first the theoretical background of coined words and then set the selection standard for coined words and examined the necessity of the teaching of coined words. Since coined words was formed since 1978 and many of them are already settled, this study set the coined words generated after 1990s as the selection standard.
Five teaching plans of coined words which can be done through various forms were presented: the contextual approach that analogizes the meaning of coined words by looking at the contextual flows, the method of the utilization of coinage using monosyllables, thematic approach that can also propose the cultural background knowledge together, the method of finding core word among several synonyms included in the same concept field and lastly, recreational approach using various games were presented. In addition, based on these teaching methods, actual class models were also presented.
I try to understand contemporary China and to get effective educational results by teaching Chinese coined words through such various methods.
