The study aims to analyze a communication language by type focusing on Internet novels, and seeks to determine how negatively the communication language affects teenagers, and to solve the problem. With this aim, the study conducted survey research into teenagers’ perceptions of a communication language and Internet novels, aimed at middle school students. Then, the study performed an analysis of the communication language used in completed Internet novels largely in terms of the orthographic aspect and a vocabulary aspect in them based on the survey result.
First, in terms of the orthographic aspect, it was discovered on a wide scale that the spellings and emoticons that did not follow the「Korean Spelling System」, involving Yeoncheol (a phenomenon that the final consonant of first syllable is pronounced as the first sound of latter syllable), fortis, the change of phonemes, omissions and contractions, addition, deconstruction, and indiscreet punctuation marks and the frequent use of emoticons are used.
Second, in light of the vocabulary aspect, there appeared to be not a few indiscreet uses of vocabularies, abbreviations, jargons, and expletives all of which had meanings which were transformed, and various types of onomatopoeias and mimetic words as well as foreign language words and wrong spellings of borrowed words.
Communication languages as of the above type as shown in Internet novels are advantageous for visual pleasure and memory effect, the effective expression of the personality of characters, and the delivery of vivid contents. Nevertheless, they may not only confuse the lingual norms for teenagers but also hurt them in acquiring a correct lingual habit. In addition, there may be a disconnection in communication between teenagers who frequently use a communication language and the existing generation that does not, and this may even result in a cultural disconnection between them. Besides, the reckless use of jargons or expletives may negatively affect the creation of a teenager’s personality.
In order to solve the aforementioned problems and cultivate desirable lingual habits and character in teenagers, the study proposed the following. First, it is necessary to include communication-related language contents in a school curriculum and teach them consistently. Second, it is required to accurately acquire correct lingual norms by reinforcing grammar education. Third, there should be active support by all teachers. In other words, all teachers should commend the national language correctly for the correct lingual habits of students and to correct the wrong or incorrect use of the national language by students immediately after discovering such use. Fourth, there is a need for leading students to have pride in their national language and to feel obliged to cultivate and keep the language in a right way, by promoting the world-recognized status and superiority of our language to students. Lastly, it is necessary to focus on language etiquette and personality education for students. Students must be guided to perceive their wrong or undesirable lingual habits for themselves and to commend a desirable lingual habit by making them perceive how a wrong lingual habit would influence interpersonal relationships.
The survey result was aimed at middle school students and found that the communication language and Internet novels highly affect the culture of teenagers. Therefore, it would be necessary to have a deep, continuous interest in Internet novels and the communication language in the novels, which are poised in the cultural sphere of students.
