A study on the use of foreign-incorporated
words in Korean and Japanese
- Based on Analysis of TV drama <Winter Sonata>-

It has been reviewed in this study how much foreign-incorporated words in Korean and Japanese are being used by comparing, analyzing and thoroughly examining a script of <Winter Sonata>, a popular TV drama and <Fuyuno Sonata>, which is a Japanese translation of the script.
The purpose of the study is to provide useful information on loanwords in learning Japanese by finding out systematically and verifiably how they get adopted from a source language and are being used in usage events.
The followings show loanwords of different categories that were used in this study to specify the differences between Korean and Japanese in terms of the loanword usage.
1) loanwords that are used in Korea and Japan both
2)loanwords that are used in Korea only
3)loanwords that are used in Japan only
4)coexistence of old language and loanwords in Korea and Japan
5)frequency of loanwords in everyday usage
One of the aspects that distinguish Japanese from Korean is the number of loanwords in it. It is much higher than the number of loanwords in Korean. It is a result reflecting each country's nature of social atmosphere to adopt loanwords. Despite the fact that Korea has been trying hard to use its own language rather than to use loanwords, which is quite different than Japan, it is discovered that Korea also has a significant number of loanwords in their language.
It is obvious from the study that Korea and Japan both use loanwords adopted from a source language without any formational or physical change. This shows that an example of foreign words that become conventionalized and they become loanwords successfully.
Many cases also show that Korea uses the source language but the source language being used in Japanese is in a different form.
Some loanwords are used in the same form of a source language and some are not. Some are used in Korean and Japanese both in the different form of a source language. It seems to result from Loanwords have been transferred from one to another country between Korea and Japan and, presumably, loandwords adopted in Japan are re-entered into Korea.
As for the co-existence of loanwords and old language, Korean shows more evidence of existence of old language. This come from the faster conventionalization of foreign words in Japan and it is a consequence of Japan's positive attitude and policy to adopt foreign culture and languages.
The number of loanwords that appear in this study is 69 that match the Basic 170 Loanwords introduced by TAMAMURA. It accounts for 40.6% and this study includes 47 loanwords that are categorized as the Most Important Loanwords by TAMAMURA. We can learn that the most frequently appeared loanwords in this study are also introduced in TAMAMURA's list of loanwords.
It will be tremendously useful in learning loanwords in Japanese effectively to refer to the results shown in this study.
The loanwords study in Korea has been focused mainly on issues related to notation, phonetics, and vocabulary, which is part of an effort to use more Korean in daily usage and reflect a perspective of linguistic policy. Consequently, the external side of the language including current usage of loanwords as well as the internal side needs to be studied.
This study has compared and reviewed usage, meanings and forms of loanwords currently being used in Japan and Korea with the hope that it can be used as informative and useful material in places where foreign languages are taught and studied.
