This study is to emphasize the necessity of teaching borrowed English words in education. There are numerous borrowed English words in the Korean vocabulary. However, many of them are not expressed in the correct way. In other words, one cannot communicate with native English speakers using borrowed English words because there are some discrepancies between the Koreanized 'borrowed' English words and their meaning when used in English speaking countries.
The focus of this study centred on 70 male students belonging to the third grade of a middle school in Seoul. The students were divided into three different groups according to their level of proficiency in English. The students were all at an advanced level. They were presented with a questionnaire containing 35 'borrowed' English words. The questionnaire included three types of questions: 1) Whether they considered the borrowed English words as incorrectly expressed. 2) If they knew the correct English expression for each borrowed English word. 3) How they recognized them.
The results of the survey showed that a small number of the students considered the borrowed English words as incorrectly expressed. While some appeared to know the correct expression, some students did not. Furthermore, the students didn't know exactly where they learnt the expressions.
Korean students make many errors when speaking and writing in English. A major factor for the students' broken English, both written and spoken, could be accounted for in the points mentioned above regarding Koreanized English. Therefore, when learning English, Korean students should learn the correct English expressions and use them in an appropriate way. The best place in which students of English should learn the correct expressions should be at school. Teaching borrowed English words is very necessary in English education.
